In recent weeks, incoming students across the country have received answers to the summer’s big question: Will I get into the study program in the autumn? She entered medical studies at the University of Bergen straight away – and that at the age of 17. – It was scary to log in to see if I got in, and I was only really shocked when I realized that I had made it. But it feels absolutely fantastic, she says. From the time she was little, she knew that she was going to be a doctor. That’s why the bum skipped 7th grade, after having been granted adapted schooling by the municipality. – Mum was very adamant that I get it, as I was so bored at school. I didn’t feel that I was being challenged enough, she explains. But the effort would prove to be worth it. Because at the end of her schooling, she was left with an average grade of just over 61 points. Medical studies in Bergen are popular among applicants. They showed that law at UiO and UiB were the most popular studies. According to the figures, Bergen has become more attractive as a study city. Now only Oslo is more popular than Bergen among students. Eleven percent more applied to Bergen this year, compared to last year. Eight percent of all applicants for higher education have the University of Bergen (UiB) as their first choice. – It seems that young people have really opened their eyes to what Bergen can offer. The city is suitable for everyone, and everyone will be welcomed when they come to start their studies in August, says UiB rector Margareth Hagen. Sharing study tips Leah Emilie looks back on particularly dedicated school years, with structured work and “barrels” of homework from home. But the effort would prove to be worth it. Because at the end of her schooling, she was left with an average grade of just over 61 points. The medical degree is regarded as one of the country’s most difficult studies to get into, and you have to have an almost “spotless character” to reach the top – and then some. – What formula did you use to achieve this? – There is probably no simple answer to that, but I set myself a goal early on, and found a working method that simply worked for me, she says. Bjørvik nevertheless believes that balance in everyday life is important for success. – It is important to distinguish between free time and school, so that school work does not take over your whole life, she says. The ambitious 17-year-old has celebrated her study place with a holiday trip to Gdansk in Poland, before she will start preparations for the start of her studies, which is in about three weeks.
