– We should have wished there was more info and learning on how to deal with birth control, says athlete Amalie Sæten. She receives support from running friend Solveig Hernandez Vråle, who earlier this week told of serious illness following the insertion of a hormonal spiral. And have now put in a P-stick that tamper very much with the cycle, so I find it difficult to know what to do, what is the best choice, says Vråle. – How much do you talk about this environment? – I’ve talked pretty much with it with my training friends. It is different what people choose to go on, but at least it is agreed that it is a difficult thing, the 25-year-old replies. – Only positive experiences top athletes are used to optimizing exercise, nutrition and sleep in search of margins. The choice of contraceptive is also important, as cycle disorders or other side effects can cause the margins to end up on the wrong side. – Personally, I have had a hormonal spiral for just over two years now. As a female top athlete, I struggled a lot with iron deficiency due to high amount of exercise, and was actually recommended to take a hormonal spiral by the national team doctor. That’s what Laura Veen says, adding that the hormone spiral solved her problems with iron deficiency. SPORTS CARE: World champion Sander Skotheim is the girlfriend of the running talent Laura Veen. And I have tried to inquire with gynecologists and doctors about what can be a good alternative, but I kind of feel that most girls have some negative experience with almost all the options, she says desperately. – Should women engage in sports, choose birth control on a different basis than other women? Gynecologist Siri Kløkstad by sex and society answers: – Now I answer as a gynecologist, and not a specialist in sports medicine. And then my answer is no, because they are in need of birth control on par with everyone else who does not do top sports. Responses: Gynecologist Siri Kløkstad. Photo: Kristoffer Eliassen Kløkstad lists qualities of various contraceptives: Hormonal contraception can help with cycle regulation, which some top athletes may need. Hormone spiral can limit bleeding, and thus be beneficial by iron deficiency. Birth control pills can help keep hormone levels more stable if the athlete is plagued with PSM or performs worse in the week before menstruation. – While others may perform better if they do not use hormonal contraception, because they have side effects of the hormonal contraception that is not compatible with sports performance, says Kløkstad, emphasizing that individual assessment is the key. Gynecologist: Siri Kløkstad, here photographed at Sex and Cohabitation Clinic in Oslo, says the hormonal spiral is safe. Photo: Sverre Lilleeng The gynecologist’s tips The gynecologist felt very sorry for the wiring, but she is aware that it was not the hormone spiral that made her seriously ill. – Solveig did not get seriously ill from the spiral, she got a serious infection as a result of the procedure it is to insert a spiral, she emphasizes. Kløkstad says that all medicine has side effects, and that all procedures come with a certain risk of complications, but that there is a low risk of getting pelvic infection after such an intervention. – We know that this unfortunately happens to some, but we have good information that spiral is a safe contraception. It is safe to use and insert, both for athletes and others. Some are unfortunate and get an infection, fortunately there are few, and most people who get an infection do not get as sick as the raw, says the gynecologist. Her advice is to be tested for sexually transmitted infections in advance of insert. Then the risk of pelvic infection is completely marginal, which in turn emphasizes how unfortunate the raw was. She had no diseases when the spiral was deployed.
