Severe Rainfall and Hailstorm Disrupt Life in Istanbul

Istanbul is currently facing severe disruptions due to unexpected heavy rainfall and hailstorms that have swept through various districts. The rains began in the early afternoon and hit hard in neighborhoods like Üsküdar, Ümraniye, and Sancaktepe, wreaking havoc and creating difficult circumstances for residents.

Flooded Streets in Ümraniye

In Ümraniye, streets turned into rivers as the downpour overcame the drainage systems. The Alemdağ Avenue became particularly notorious for its swamping, with vehicles struggling to navigate through waterlogged paths. This overwhelming rain caught many off guard, leading to traffic jams and delays.

Residents in Üsküdar, Ümraniye, and Sancaktepe echoed similar sentiments, stating that they felt unprepared for this sudden climatic change. The heavy rains caused severe inconvenience, especially to those commuting in the affected areas.

Effects of Hail on Sancaktepe

In Sancaktepe, hail struck before shifting to heavy rain. The change in weather left many unprotected, caught between needing to find shelter from the sudden storm without any warning.

As weather conditions worsened, several residents found their homes inundated. The rapid rainfall overwhelmed channels designed to carry water away, leading to flooding worries across multiple neighborhoods.

Küçükçekmece Waterlogged Apartments and Businesses

One of the areas most severely affected was Küçükçekmece. Reports emerged of several businesses and apartments on Barbaros Street being flooded. Water filled the basements of five buildings, ruining belongings and causing distress among residents. Emergency services and local authorities mobilized to assist with water removal efforts, though many inhabitants struggled to salvage their properties.

"Our hearts are breaking," lamented Mahmut Güler, whose business was flooded. Güler criticized the city’s water management services, emphasizing that the issue stemmed from inadequate drainage systems. "The entire street is under water," he added.

Another affected resident, Selim Yardımcı, remarked, "We are used to it now. Our apartment flooded again. They told us the pipes are too small, and we offered to sign petitions for upgrades, but nothing changed. I lost all my belongings again."

Yusuf Bekir, another resident, shared that this marks the second flooding incident within a week. "The rain came strong again, and our apartment filled with water like the last time," he said. His concern transcended personal loss, indicating growing frustrations among the community regarding the city’s infrastructure.

Warnings from AKOM

In light of these events, the Istanbul Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) issued a warning, predicting that the weather would remain unsettled throughout the week. They forecast intermittent rain with occasional thunderstorms, advising residents to remain cautious.

Impact Beyond Istanbul: Antalya’s Hail Damage

While Istanbul faced heavy rainfall, the Mediterranean province of Antalya was struck by hail that damaged agricultural land. In the Serik district, hail the size of walnuts fell, severely impacting crops and greenhouses. Farmers lamented the weather’s toll and called for assistance from authorities.

In response to the disastrous weather events, meteorology services across the country have issued yellow alerts for twelve provinces, including Ankara, Antalya, and others, anticipated to experience similar storm activity.

In conclusion, the recent heavy rains and hail storms in Istanbul and nearby areas not only caused significant disruption but also highlighted the vital need for improved urban infrastructure to handle unforeseen weather events. As residents navigate the immediate impacts of these weather changes, a deeper conversation about preparedness and resilience will be essential for urban planning in the future.
