He was last discharged from Rikshospitalet at the end of December last year, also then with an infection. In October 2020, he underwent an operation to replace a heart valve. It was in 2005 that the king had an artificial heart valve inserted for the first time. Such heart valves have a lifespan of between 10 and 15 years, and there is therefore nothing unusual in such a one having to be replaced after some time. In December 2003, King Harald was diagnosed with bladder cancer. On 8 December of the same year, the cancerous tumor was removed in what the doctors characterized as a very successful operation.
