The Mexican referee Katia Itzel García became the focal point of a significant controversy following her officiating in the Leagues Cup 2025 match between Rayados de Monterrey and FC Cincinnati, held on Tuesday, July 29. Despite the match resulting in a 3-2 victory for the American team, many Monterrey fans criticized the officiating, citing perceived poor decisions that they believed severely impacted the outcome of the game.
However, the issue transcended just sports. Post-match, García took to her social media platforms to reveal that she received a barrage of messages laden with verbal abuse and threats, targeting her directly after the game.
“In Mexico, where ten women are killed every day, and 91 people die daily (both men and women), we cannot normalize violence. Total rejection of violence in all forms!”,” posted the referee in an Instagram story.

Katia Itzel García has a rich background in refereeing, being the first woman to officiate a match in the MX Varonel League and having participated in numerous high-profile tournaments. Her role in the 2025 Leagues Cup was meant to be yet another step in her impressive career; however, the backlash from the match against Cincinnati was anything but supportive, exposing the underlying challenges female referees face in the sporting world.

The wave of criticism regarding her officiating soon devolved into harassment and threats. While some fans highlighted specific decisions made during the match as the foundation for their discontent, the ensuing digital violence reached alarming levels. In response, García bravely chose to shed light on her experiences by addressing the issue publicly, urging the relevant authorities to intervene.

The increasing violence directed at referees, particularly women in this role, has become a significant concern in modern football. Despite multiple sports organizations advocating for increased respect and tolerance, incidents like these highlight that there remains an urgent need to combat aggression against officials who ensure fairness in the game.
