Journalists from the AFP news agency have seen Chinese projectiles being fired and sent into the Taiwan Strait. The projectiles were fired from a military installation in Pingtan, according to the journalists. Clouds of smoke and the sound of explosions were then reported. Shells are being fired in six zones around the island, The Guardian reports. It happens after the Chinese authorities announced that they were going to use live ammunition during their exercises around the island. The Chinese today started the largest ever military exercises in the waters around Taiwan after the visit of Congress leader Nancy Pelosi (82) yesterday. The Chinese will surround the entire island militarily, and have announced the exercise will last until Sunday. – We came to make it crystal clear that we will not let Taiwan down, Pelosi said when she met Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen. Pelosi is America’s third most powerful politician and speaker of Congress. The fact that such a high-ranking politician from the US is visiting the island provoked the Chinese, who issued strong warnings against the visit. – We are supporters of the status quo, we do not want anything to happen to Taiwan by force, Pelosi said and clearly showed that she does not want China to become more involved in the island.
