Jakob Ingebrigtsen points to the psychological advantage of the 5,000 meters – Olympics Paris 2024

The big climax was not in the 1500 meters, when he ran into 4th place behind Cole Hocker, Josh Kerr and Yared Nuguse. The favorite exercise was a disappointment, but half a day later he showed that the form is present. Ingebrigtsen easily made it to the Olympic final in the 5,000 metres. – There is a lot to be done and there is an extremely high level of running. It’s all the more rewarding if you succeed, was the message afterwards. He was carried away along the way and emphasized that he felt strong. Now the final awaits in the 5,000 metres, an exercise he hardly runs outside of championships – and “never” loses. The 23-year-old has two WC golds and three EC golds over the distance. It is not the favorite exercise. But it’s on his practice. – Everyone knows I’m the best. That’s what the outspoken champion told news, when we met him at home in Sandnes before the Olympic Games. The success at the distance has obviously given confidence. Psychological advantage The championship races of 5,000 meters often require 3,000-meter skills, because there is rarely anyone who dares to burn the powder from the start. Over such distances, hardly anyone is able to keep up with the Norwegian. Naturally, the competitors are fully aware of this. Then it can be an awe-inspiring sight to see the Norwegian on the starting line. – It is clear that there is an enormous psychological advantage, says Ingebrigtsen about the track record at the distance. Ingebrigtsen’s achievements at 5000 meters World Championships: Gold in Eugene in 2022, 13.09,24 minutes Gold in Budapest in 2023, 13.11,30 5th place in Doha in 2019, 13.02.93 European Championships: Gold in Berlin in 2018, 13.17,06 Gold in Munich in 2022, 13.21,13 Gold in Rome in 2024, 13.20,11 Jakob Ingebrigtsen makes his Olympic debut over the distance in Paris. He sees himself as the favorite in the Olympics, but emphasizes that things can happen. A slightly reckless maneuver from a competitor – and suddenly the race can be ruined. Six teams went down during the semi-finals. Four of them get new opportunities. That’s not how it works in the next round. No one gets a medal for falling. – Nothing can be taken for granted, but when you have won global championships of 5000 before, most people know that you have to watch out for people like that, he says and continues: – The more often you do it – win – the more people will give up chance for a gold medal. It is clearly an advantage. Sees no threats Of the athletes who are likely to be in an Olympic final in the 5,000 metres, Ingebrigtsen, on the other hand, is far from having the best personal record. 12:48.45 minutes is far behind Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet’s winning time from this year’s Bislett Games: 12:36.73. One of the competitors, EC bronze winner Dominic Lobalu, thinks it will be difficult to catch up with the Norwegian: – I think he is very strong now, I can’t promise anything of course, but it looks very good. It’s nice to have a performer you can look up to. He is a good example for all athletes, says the Swiss, who runs for the refugee team in the Olympics. – I can beat anyone, at any time news expert Vebjørn Rodal believes Gebrhiwet’s best chance is to get help from his teammates to speed up. He brings Biniam Mehary and Addisu Yihune to the final. When Ingebrigtsen talked about the tactics before the Games, he thought there was no problem. – The thing is that if they speed up, it is only an advantage for me, he believes. – How? – I am happy to run fast myself. If a nation with three pieces in the final runs a team pace at the front, then I can just follow along and run away from them at the end. That’s how confident I am about my physical abilities at 5,000 metres. I know I can beat anyone, anytime. SUPPORT RUNNERS: Jakob Ingebrigtsen ran with Mehary and Yihune in the attempt. Has the tactics ready Before the Olympic final of 5000 meters in Paris, Jakob Ingebrigtsen has already run around one mile at competitive speed earlier in the championship. He uses his rest days for quiet training sessions to keep his body moving, and for pastimes with relaxing entertainment such as TV series. In the last days of the Olympics, he is also visited by his wife Elisabeth Asserson Ingebrigtsen and daughter Filippa. Because on the day of the final itself, the machinery must be in tip-top shape, and the race plan is already ready. – The important thing is to run the best tactical race in the competition. Save a lot of energy for the last 1500. If you have done a good race until then, you are in a good position to finish first. – Fortunately, it is an honest exercise, where the best usually wins. The person who is the strongest that day, the best, mostly gets to the finish line first in a 5000 final, says Ingebrigtsen. PS! You can watch the 5000 meter final on news 1 on 11 August, at 20:00. Also running there is Narve Gilje Nordås, who impressed greatly in his trial heat.
