– It’s absolutely fantastic – news Sørlandet – Local news, TV and radio

– It is absolutely fantastic. Very bright light. It is surreal to see it in reality, says Henrik Auestad Broen. The 21-year-old is one of many who have taken the trip out to sea at night, to experience the water that glows neon blue in the dark. The light is due to an algae called Noctiluca scintillans, or “morild algae”. Water with a lot of fireflies can turn rust-red during the day, but in the evening it lights up when it is in motion. The bridge says that it has become popular to go out at night to look at the water. – It is very sad for everyone who does not get this. I really wish everyone could see what we got to see, he says. Out early this year – What is a bit spectacular about the algae is that it emits a flash of light when it is stressed or touched, says researcher at the Institute of Marine Research, Lars Johan Nøstvold. It is not uncommon for algae to appear along the southern coast. – We get a report on it every year. But usually we see this in late summer or autumn. What is a bit special this year is that it is so early, says Nøstvold. The algae has been seen in several places from Larvik to Rogaland in the last week. According to Nøstvold, it is not dangerous to swim in water where the algae is concentrated. – You can then feel that you get small “jelly balls” that remain on the body, but it is not dangerous at all. – Lights up on the hand – It’s very disgusting. But if you just take a lot in your hand and squeeze, it kind of lights up on your hand. That’s what William Lyngstad Rønning (9) says. Together with his family, he has been out with the boat the last two nights to look at algae. But so far they have not bathed in the algae. – I want to try swimming in it in the evening, says elder brother Aksel (11). It was the Grimstad address times that first spoke to the family. William Lyngstad Rønning and Aksel Lyngstad Rønning think it’s fun to be up at night to look at the morild algae. Nevertheless, she makes an appeal to others who are going out to experience the spectacular phenomenon. – We think it was a bit scary with all the boats that were out and had no lanterns or anything like that. There are many people who drive quite fast, and you can’t see grounds or posts like that standing out in the water and such. in grims Photo: Miriam Margrethe Grov / news “Sjoko-water” during the day Previously, news wrote about the Institute of Marine Research, which received several messages about “sjoko-water”. The water that glows at night is often rust-red during the day. During the day, the algae Noctiluca scintillans has a rust-red color.
