He was president from 2006 to 2015. Napolitano joined the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in 1945. Upon the dissolution of the PCI in 1991, he joined the Partito democratico della sinistra (PDS). In 2006, he was elected by the parliament to become the country’s president. Seven years later he was re-elected for a second term. He stepped down as president in 2015, before the election period was over, he was then 89 years old.
