The Return of Colin Angle: A New Venture in Robotics

Colin Angle, the co-founder of iRobot, stepped away from the company after the disappointing collapse of a deal with Amazon. Yet, the realm of home robotics has remained at the forefront of his thoughts. His latest endeavor, a unique robotic creation, does not focus on household chores. With four legs, moving ears, and an emotional design, this robot aims to forge a connection with its users.

A New Chapter: Familiar Machines & Magic

Following his departure from iRobot in 2024, Angle collaborated with Ira Renfrew and Chris Jones, both seasoned iRobot veterans, to establish Familiar Machines & Magic. At a recent Wall Street Journal event titled “Future of Everything,” Angle unveiled their initial product: a furry quadrupedal robot named “Familiar.” The name draws inspiration from European folklore, referring to supernatural companions of witches.

What is the Familiar?

The Familiar is challenging to categorize. It doesn’t speak, isn’t simply a robotic pet, nor is it a smart speaker with legs. Boasting 23 points of articulation, it can move its head, neck, ears, eyes, and eyebrows. Its mobility is restricted to a calm four-legged walk, and it lacks climbing capabilities or the ability to grasp objects. Instead of verbal communication, it employs non-verbal cues, including meowing and purring, to express emotions.

Design Choices and Communication

In a bid to avoid preconceived expectations, the robot’s face is intentionally designed without resembling any specific animal. This approach allows users to build a unique relationship with it, free from the conventional expectations tied to pets.

Technological Underpinnings

The Familiar is powered by Nvidia’s Jetson Orin chip and incorporates a custom multimodal AI model. This model enables processing of audio, language, vision, and memory on the device without a cloud connection. With built-in cameras, microphones, and a touch-sensitive exterior, it can operate independently of the internet.

Recent Advances in AI

Morgan Pope, the creative director and former Disney Research researcher, explained that advancements in reinforcement learning allow for smooth motion at a lower cost. Generative AI contributes by providing an illusion of intelligence, making the robot feel coherent and alive.

Purpose and Target Audience

Interestingly, the Familiar isn’t marketed as a toy or an assistant; its primary goal is to promote healthy routines and companionship. Angle envisions it being especially beneficial for families with small children, elderly individuals living alone, or those seeking to enhance personal well-being.

Interactions and Autonomy

The robot is designed to observe and respond to its environment. For instance, if it detects someone engrossed in their smartphone for too long, it will attempt to divert their attention. It can also adapt its behavior based on the context, like remaining still when someone enters the house in a hurry.

Future of AI

Addressing Previous Failures in Robotics

The journey of companion robots in homes has been rocky, with notable failures like Jibo, Anki Vector, and Sony’s Aibo. These robots often captivated users initially but eventually fell into neglect. Angle believes AI has the potential to change the narrative. “If this ends up being a toy, we will have failed,” he stated, emphasizing the goal of creating a meaningful presence in users’ lives.

Concerns and Future Prospects

The Familiar’s prototype was managed remotely during its unveiling, but Angle assured that it will be fully autonomous by 2027, with price estimates aligned with pet ownership costs. However, the presence of always-on cameras and microphones raises privacy concerns, despite claims of no cloud data sharing.

The Journey Ahead

With expertise from Disney Research, Boston Dynamics, MIT, and more, Familiar Machines & Magic is poised to turn Angle’s long-held dream of creating artificial life into reality. As technology continues to evolve, the key question remains: can they craft a compelling product that users will embrace in their homes?
