It is the American media platform Wall Street Journal that writes on Saturday that the foreign minister of Qatar Mohammed bin Abdulraham al Thani will meet the head of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad David Barnea in Oslo. The aim is to achieve agreements on the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas in return for Israel again agreeing to a temporary ceasefire in Gaza. The Wall Street Journal refers to sources familiar with the matter, without going into this further. The Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz also reports that the Mossad chief will meet al Thani “somewhere in Europe”. David Barnea is head of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad. Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide writes in a text message to news that he had talks with al Thani on Friday. Beyond that, he has no comment on possible talks between Qatar and the Mossad in Oslo. Barnea is also scheduled to meet representatives from the Egyptian authorities, but does not say whether this will take place in Oslo. Hamas still has many hostages The foreign ministers from Qatar and a number of other Arab countries, in addition to their colleagues from the Benelux countries and the Nordic countries, were in Oslo on Friday to discuss the situation in Gaza. During a ceasefire in November, Hamas released around 100 hostages, most of them women, children and foreign nationals. Israel then released 240 women and teenagers from Israeli prisons. According to the Israeli authorities, Hamas is probably still holding 129 hostages, who were taken during the terrorist attack into Israel on 7 October. On Friday, it was reported that Israeli forces had mistakenly shot three hostages who had managed to escape from Hamas captivity.
