When Dan Martinsen was on his way home from a football match at Hadeland on Thursday evening, he had a special experience. Along national road 4 near Lygna i Gran, there was a bear lurking in the edge of the ditch. Dan decided to stop the car on the other side of the road, and caught the teddy bear on video. TRIP: According to SNO, the bear had a long journey before he was observed at highway 4 in Lygna. It was Oppland Arbeiderblad that reported this story first. Recently, the bear has been observed in several places in Eastern Norway. He is on a real long trip. Seemed curious Dan Martinsen says that it was a fun experience to see the bear so close. He was on his way home from his son’s football match, and says that several of them stopped to take pictures and videos of the animal. EXCITING: Dan says that it was exciting to see bears up close. Previously, he has only seen it in zoos. Photo: Lars Erik Skrefsrud / news – I think it was very exciting, and I thought it was the one I had seen in the newspapers, he says. Several local newspapers have mentioned the bear and his journey in Eastern Norway. Dan thinks the bear seemed very curious, and at one point thought it was going to cross the highway to explore the spectators. – We chose to leave, so he wouldn’t cross the road. But he did after we left. According to Dan, the bear continued northwest. PROBABLY YOUNG MALE BEAR: This photo has been taken by the Norwegian Nature Conservancy of the bear that is now on the move in Hadeland. Photo: Ole Knut Steinset / Statens naturoppsyn Special itinerary Ole Knut Steinset is responsible for large game in the Statens Naturoppsyn (SNO) in Oppland. He says that this bear has been on a real long trip. – We are reasonably sure that one and the same bear has walked a circuit from Elverum to Skedsmokorset. There it has turned and gone north on the west side of Mjøsa. ORIGIN: Steinset says that SNO is trying to find the origin of the bear. They have taken DNA analyzes of hair and faeces, and are waiting for answers. Photo: Stine Bækkelien / news According to Steinset, it is not entirely unusual for young male bears to go on a journey. Primarily because they can be chased away from areas where larger male bears want to be on their own. But there is still something special about the teddy bear’s itinerary. – He has ended up in an area where we have rarely seen bears before. He has walked near roads and exposed himself quite a bit, so he doesn’t seem very afraid of people, says Steinset. And he has been exposed. The young male bear has almost become a celebrity. Had to turn people away On Wednesday evening, many had gathered in Gran municipality in Hadeland, hoping to see the teddy bear. – I understand that it is very exciting, but when a lot of people gather, situations can arise. That’s why we chose to show them away, says Steinset. He nevertheless points out that the bear is not dangerous to people. – We have not had any situations where he has been aggressive or irritated. Bears are extremely rarely dangerous to humans. HARMLESS: The bear is not dangerous to humans, according to Steinset. Photo: Dan Martinsen If you were to meet the celebrity bear, or any other bear, Steinset suggests enjoying it. – Few people are lucky enough to see it, so you have to be happy about it. If it comes on suddenly, you can make yourself known by singing or shouting, and retreat. So far, the bear has not taken any livestock on the journey either. Steinset says he simply does not seem interested in, for example, sheep, and has passed several without anything happening. – However, he has destroyed some beehives in several places, so he is probably very fond of honey. Do you think you should consider taking it out? Wilderness celebrity Lars Monsen has encountered bears hundreds of times in Alaska, Canada and Scandinavia. He says he is skeptical about the behavior of the animal that now wanders Hadeland and calls it “very unusual”. – Usually, I want as many bears as possible in the terrain. But when he becomes so approachable, I actually think that you should consider eliminating it. Now I haven’t followed the last few days, because I’ve been up in Femundsmarka. SHOW RESPECT: Lars Monsen says that people must not be afraid to walk in nature, but says he encourages respect if you meet a bear. (Archive photo) Photo: Hanne Wilhelms / news But if it continues to be close to the population and such, then I think we should take it out. But it is not my decision, says Monsen to news. In any case, he urges people to respect the animal, but does not want to scare anyone from using nature even if there are predators there. – Don’t be afraid to go for a walk in nature now. But be like most animals, bring your senses with you and let yourself be known. Then it goes well, says Monsen.
