– It has been a living nightmare to stand in this. The physical injuries and pain are one thing, but the psychological strain has been enormous, says Helena H. Høie. On Wednesday last week, Høie and her dog Theo were attacked by five Irish wolfhounds outside an animal clinic in Askim. They were on their way out from the vet. Outside, two large dogs charged towards them. Høie was left lying on the ground with his dog under him. The attack continued, at the same time three other dogs arrived. – I felt the dogs bite at the same time. It was impossible to get up with such massive dogs on top of them. I felt panic and thought this was the end. My biggest concern was whether Theo was going to make it. – Screaming at the top of their lungs According to Høie, none of the dogs that attacked on a leash were in the lead. – We passed quietly and calmly and my dog was calm. I find that the owner lost complete control of the dogs since. When I discovered that one of the owners had also been attacked, I screamed at the top of my lungs in the hope that others would come to help. The dog Theo had to get stitches and had his leg cast in a cast after the dog attack. After the incident, she was hospitalized for two nights with significant bite injuries to her hands and legs. She has reported the relationship to the police, who are now investigating the matter. The dog owners: – Terribly tragic news has been in contact with the owners of the Irish wolfhounds. Both describe the incident as tragic. They explain that the dog that first went after the woman on Wednesday had just woken up from anesthesia. The dog must have jumped out of the cage in the car at the same time as another dog was placed in the same cage. The other three dogs that were already in the cage followed, they explain. The dogs were seized by the police after the incident which took place outside an animal clinic in Askim on Wednesday. In the car behind the police officers is one of the dogs that attacked a woman. We compensate damages and pain and suffering, and would like to get in touch with the person who was bitten. We did everything we could to help calm the situation and take care of the lady who was bitten and her dog. The dog owners describe the incident as unfortunate. The two dog owners have extensive experience with the breed and breeding. – It is terribly tragic and very regrettable that this happened, say the owners. Reported after a similar attack Two years ago, Vetle Johansen was attacked and bitten by several Irish wolfhounds when he was out jogging with his dog Lego on a hiking trail in Askim. Vetle Johansen and the dog Lego (7) were attacked and injured by five large dogs when they were out for a run two years ago. Photo: Private He believes it was the same dogs that attacked Høie. – I was absolutely certain that my dog was going to die. Everyone flew in at once. I stayed on the ground with my dog. In my world it seemed like it lasted an hour. I was in shock and it was very scary, Johansen describes. Both the 20-year-old and the dog Lego suffered severe bite injuries. He was concerned when he heard about the latest dog attack. – The first thing I thought was that I hope the police really do something now. We never got a conclusion to the case. The Danish-Swedish farm dog Lego suffered two deep bites to the neck and head. Photo: private The one dog owner acknowledges that it was her dogs that bit Johansen, but says that it was other individuals than those that bit the woman in Askim. She calls the incident a tragic accident. – I don’t usually have my dogs loose, and was inattentive for a second. The dogs ran off towards him when he came running through the yard at home. My dogs went towards his dog which was being lifted, which unfortunately led to both being bitten, says the owner. – I am finished with that matter and have made amends. Smaalenenes Avis first wrote about Johansen’s experiences. Criticizes the police Vetle Johansen’s father, Espen Johansen, reported the attack on his son to the police two years ago. The case was sent to mediation in the conflict council, but was returned to the police because the mediation was not carried out. Vetle Johansen’s hand received several bite injuries when he was attacked by the dogs. Photo: private – I am amazed at the police’s handling and decision in the case. Dogs that show aggressive behavior and harm both animals and people, and that are let loose in a pack, are not safe dog keeping. The police confirm that they investigated the case, but no one was punished after the attack two years ago. – The public prosecutor’s office can confirm that the suspect in this case was charged with failure to prosecute, says police attorney Alf Robin Gundersen Minothi. Høie is still deeply affected by the incident on Wednesday last week. She struggles with sleep deprivation, severe pain and flashbacks. Now she hopes the police will take the case seriously. – I expect the police to follow up on this case so that a similar incident is not repeated. This could have fatal consequences. The police state that the investigation is in an initial phase and that further questioning remains. So far, the five Irish wolfhounds have been seized and sent to a kennel. – We want a quick clarification of what will happen to the dogs, and it is a great stress not to know, says the dog owner.
