The US Department of Justice has published parts of the basis for the FBI’s search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on 8 August. But a federal judge in Florida ruled on Thursday that the redacted documents should be made public. Earlier this week, the New York Times wrote that Donald Trump had more than 300 classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. Trump is said to have taken the documents from the White House with him after he stepped down as president of the United States in January 2021. The US National Archives preserves such documents for posterity and has asked to get them back from Trump. Then the FBI went through 15 boxes of documents from Trump, which were handed over to the National Archives in January. According to the legal basis for the search, which has now been published, the investigators found 184 classified documents. 25 of the documents were labeled top secret, according to the search warrant. Trump is being investigated for possible violations of the Espionage Act. But the former president denies having done anything illegal, and believes he is the subject of a political witch hunt.
