On June 3, 2025, a concerning incident occurred at the Errahma Mosque in Villeurbanne, near Lyon, when an individual was apprehended after allegedly burning a copy of the Quran . The Lyon Prosecutor’s office confirmed that the suspect, whose age remains undisclosed, has been placed in custody and is described as “psychologically fragile” according to police sources.
The shocking event took place in the early hours of Monday, shortly before the first morning prayer . The Council of Mosques of Rhône (CMR) reported that an individual, with their face uncovered, entered the prayer hall, seized a copy of the Quran, set it ablaze, and then discarded it outside the mosque before fleeing the scene.
According to a police source with information from the scene, the man entered the mosque around 3:45 a.m. and had a brief interaction with a worshipper who asked him to remove his shoes. There was no violence involved; however, upon leaving, he took a Quran that was available for the faithful and “allegedly burned it on the street.” No alert was raised to the police at the time; it was only later, when the mosque’s treasurer filed a complaint, that the authorities became aware of the incident.
Reviewing CCTV Footage
The faithful witness who saw the burning incident managed to extinguish the flames without initially realizing the significance of the act. Kamel Kabtane, the rector of the Grand Mosque of Lyon , explained that the witness later informed mosque officials, who subsequently reviewed the CCTV footage and decided to file a complaint on Tuesday.
Authorities have initiated an investigation focused on “damage or deterioration by a means dangerous to people, committed based on race, ethnicity, nationality, or religion,” according to the Lyon Prosecutor’s office. By Tuesday afternoon, two plainclothes officers were seen leaving the Errahma mosque as reporters covered the unfolding situation.
The officials from the Errahma mosque expressed strong condemnations of this extremely grave act of Islamophobia , especially in a climate already strained by violent attacks against their community. Local representatives, including Rhône’s La France insoumise deputies, Idir Boumertit and Gabriel Amard, as well as Villeurbanne’s socialist mayor, Cédric Van Styvendael, echoed this sentiment, also calling it an Islamophobic act .

“We assure our Muslim fellow citizens in Rhône of the full attention and support of the State in the face of hateful acts targeting them,” stated Fabienne Buccio, the prefect of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, confirming that she is in contact with community representatives to implement necessary security measures .
A Growing Climate of Hostility
The CMR referred to the incident as a “heinous desecration” , calling it a serious affront to the dignity of the faithful and to the fundamental principles of our Republic . They urged the authorities to “take all necessary measures to identify the perpetrator of this act and pursue exemplary prosecutions.”
The CMR further highlighted a series of hate-fueled attacks and a growing climate of hostility faced by citizens of the Islamic faith. Citing recent events, they referenced the murder of young Malian Aboubakar Cissé , who was killed in a mosque in the Grand-Combe in Gard, as well as the shooting of a Tunisian man in Puget-sur-Argens.
A crime described as “premeditated,” “clearly racist,” and “probably anti-Muslim,” according to Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau. The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has taken over the investigation, marking one of the first examinations of a racist homicide linked to far-right ideas.
Recent reports indicate that the first three months of 2025 saw a staggering 72% increase in anti-Muslim acts compared to the same period in 2024, with 79 cases documented by the Ministry of the Interior.
