In the company of good friends – Expression

With tears in her throat and tears in the corners of her eyes, a disappointed and ashamed minister made it clear that she is stepping down as a minister. It is incredible that she puts herself in a situation where she so clearly breaks the rules of competence and appoints and proposes three close friends to various board positions. It is these errors related to competence that make Anette Trettebergstuen resign: Appointment of Bård Nylund as a member of the Equality and Diversity Committee November 2021. Nominated Bård Nylund for a position as a member of the Men’s Committee in the summer of 2022 Proposal of Tina Stiegler for a position as a board member in board of Den Nationale Scene winter/spring 2023. Appointment of Bård Nylund as board representative of the Norwegian Folk Museum April 2023. Appointment of Renate Larsen as board member of Den Norske Opera & Ballett June 2023. Anette Trettebergstuen has today chosen to retire as cultural and Minister for Equality Important cultural power cannot be distributed in the hot tub or on girlfriend trips abroad. Offices and positions must be given to those who are qualified. Not because you get a kiss on the cheek and call each other “the most beautiful in the world” on Facebook. Therefore, it cannot be suspected that this is how it is happening. Disability is not prohibited. It is not dangerous. For people who live on trust, the regulations should be seen as a friend, not an enemy. It shouldn’t be particularly difficult either: You shouldn’t make decisions that affect people you are, or your critics may perceive you to be, too close. If this is not obvious to you, you can ask someone else to assess it for you. It’s best to be on the safe side. Here, Anette Trettebergstuen has failed miserably in a series of misjudgments. It is her own responsibility. Culture Minister Anette Trettebergstuen resigned on Friday after it became known that she had given important board positions to several close friends. Similar, but different For Trettebergstuen, a clarifying light first dawned when ministerial colleague Tonje Brenna met the press and informed about her errors of integrity. Trettebergstuen notified the prime minister and set about mapping out its own appointments. That timeline didn’t turn out very well. For Jonas Gahr Støre, there are big and decisive differences between the Brenna case, which he called “serious” on Tuesday, and Trettebergstuen, in which he is in reality losing all confidence. The difference is there, but can be discussed at the same time. Støre emphasizes that Trettebergstuen knew she was incompetent, but acted as if she was not. Then she breaks the rules openly, or is unable to understand them. Both parts are grounds for dismissal. Brenna has had doubts about her incapacity. She had it formally assessed too late. Then the appointment of Frode Elgesem as head of the Wergeland center and the allocation of money to the center and, in practice, also Utøya AS should have been done by others. Brenna therefore believes (for) a long time that she is capable and therefore acts accordingly. Now she says herself that it is wrong. In both cases, in any case, the decisions were taken on the wrong basis and are invalid. Brenna’s doubts benefit her. For Støre, this is reasonable, others may consider it differently. In any case, Trettebergstuen’s case concerns more cases, more people and more money. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre refers to the red guidelines for political leadership in the government. The eligibility rules are clearly stated there. Støre assures that the regulations were carefully reviewed when the government was new, and are often referred to in ongoing work. Støre postponed his half-yearly press conference to comment on Trettebergstuen’s departure. Photo: NTB An internal, self-inflicted crisis Støre himself believes that training and routines are good enough and believes that the ministers themselves bear all the responsibility anyway. He believes that it will be labor-intensive if all appointments made by a government apparatus in matters large and small are to be discussed formally or informally in plenary. The impression is that the Solberg government conducted such discussions informally in plenary to a greater extent and scope. Intentional or not, this can be a safety valve for more people to consider whether appointments are wise or not. The Støre government is struggling with trust among voters. Whether it is the economic policy or general trust that the government has control and overview in the management of the country and all the crises that strike. Internal and self-inflicted crises are the last thing this government needs. Confidence in the crew and management ability has been important for Ap in all election campaigns. The competence cases build up under the impression that this government is struggling with something fundamental in its communication and working style. For those who were in doubt, after reading opinion polls over the past year and hearing about all the internal turmoil in the Labor Party, this week has shown at least one thing: This government actually has friends.
