Increase in Electricity Rates in March: Key Highlights

“The increases are limited, in a range that goes from $400 to $5,500,” the Government explained (Illustrative Image Infobae)

The Secretary of Energy of the Nation has announced a new increase in electricity rates starting this March. While the precise percentage of the increase remains unspecified, the government has assured that the overall impact will be minimal, with some users even facing lower bills than in February.

Impact on Users

According to government officials, only about 37% of users will notice an increase in their final electricity bills. The change is characterized as minor, with increases ranging from $400 to $5,500. In contrast, 63% of users may actually see a reduction in their bills, thanks to the seasonal decline in energy consumption.

“March is a mild month and consumption is reduced,” clarified the Ministry of Energy. Consequently, the subsidizable limit is set at 150 kWh per month, significantly lower than in the peak summer months. Thus, only those consumers maintaining the same usage or higher than in February will see an increased amount on their bills.

Additional Insights on Natural Gas Rates

In addition to electricity, the average nationwide increase in natural gas rates will be approximately 0.96%. This rise is attributed to the annual fixed PAU and the current low season for consumption.

The current billing system operates under the Targeted Energy Subsidies System (SEF). This framework replaces earlier classifications and establishes a binary segmentation: households either receive a subsidy or pay the full costs, depending on their socioeconomic status.

Understanding Subsidy Eligibility

Eligibility for state aid relies primarily on a household’s income, which must not surpass the value of three Total Basic Baskets. This is evaluated alongside other vulnerability indicators to ascertain qualification for subsidies.

The management of these subsidies is centralized within the Registry of Targeted Energy Subsidies (ReSEF), which has replaced the older RASE. A noteworthy point is that users already registered will not need to reapply; their data will transition automatically. Nonetheless, the platform allows for modifications or the verification of their benefit status through Mi Argentina.

Technical Breakdown of the New Subsidies

  • Electricity: Beneficiaries are entitled to a basic 50% discount on up to 300 kWh during peak months and a reduced limit of 150 kWh in milder months.
  • Natural Gas: The 50% subsidy is also maintained but is only applicable during peak demand periods (April to September).
  • Extra Benefit 2026: An additional bonus of up to 25%, implemented in January, will gradually decline monthly until it expires in December.

The Transition of Existing Programs

Importantly, the new regime has absorbed beneficiaries from the Home Program and propane gas users through networks. These users will have a six-month window to register with the SEF before the Home Program officially ceases to exist, centralizing all energy subsidies under the new targeted system.
