WWF has recently released a report showing that during one decade, from 2013 to 2023 at least 742 new species were found in the area. – It is an expression of me not knowing everything about nature yet. In fact, I know quite a bit, says Jacob Fjalland. In reality, it is not so wild that over 700 species have been found in the giant rainforest. In all, people today know about 1.7 million species of animals and plants on a world plan, but researchers bet that there are 50 million species in the world – perhaps even more. Race of registration finds both fireflies, coffee and a new monkey the new species that have been discovered in the Congo Pool, range from orchids and a new type of coffee, to the fire flogs, bats, a crocodile, a new type of monkey, a shaking pad and much more. One thing that is important to include is that when it is written that a new species has been discovered it does not mean that it has been hidden from human from before. Indigenous peoples who cage in the forest have close contact with nature and often sit on a tremendous knowledge of plants and animals. The WWF report, which states that hundreds of new species are found from new discoveries, but rather from the fact that it is the first time these species have been written down and registered by researchers. Then you might think that it seems very good that researchers are discovering new species all the time. One might think that the biodiversity crisis is not too big a problem yet. This is not true. Very many of the species that are discovered by researchers today are already already trough when they are found. They are the trough of climate change, but also by human activity such as deforestation, illegal mining, agriculture and infrastructure. Jacob Fjalland also makes a declining assessment: – I am not sure if I can ever write down all species, he says. I also believe that many of the species that are found today, with the speed we see that they are disappearing today, can be aware of before they are discovered. The more know, the more you can do it is still an important development that new species have been discovered. – It is super important to make sure that all these exciting species are found, but also to understand the dynamics and needs of the species. The more I know and the more species I know, the more can work out measures to protect nature, says Jacob Fjalland. And it has an effect when the world is together to protect nature. In 2024, a new study showed that almost most projects that are about protection and recovery of nature help to slow down or better loss of biodiversity. But in order for it to work, one must know the species that are to be protected.
