19 January 2023 at 14:03 Valnes defended NM gold – Northug took silver Erik Valnes has not had the best season this year, but at Gjøvik there was no doubt. The skier from Bardufoss was by far the strongest in the men’s sprint final on Thursday afternoon. Even Northug could make history in a family context, but was unable to catch up with the new Norwegian champion on the run. Thus the Trønder had to settle for a NM silver. – Valnes will come back in a big way, said Northug in the goal area after the final. Pål Golberg took the bronze. Valnes took the lead from the start, but at the top of the last sprint hill none of the national team runners wanted to take the lead. Then the home hope Ansgar Evensen saw his opportunity and set out, but he was quickly brought back in by the elite runners. Valnes got a small gap in the race, but had to give everything to secure the gold ahead of Northug. – I am impressed by Erik (Valnes) and Northug in the final here. Valnes shows pace and it’s fun to watch, says news expert Therese Johaug.
