– You can be as creative as you want. I don’t care if someone uses a Molotov cocktail or a match. The point is that Equinor engages in mass murder supported by the state, people must be allowed to fight against that, said climate activist Joachim Skahjem. The new measures in the climate fight did not sit well with Frederic Hauge, who himself has participated in many climate actions over the years. – I am really saddened that we have got this type of attitude in the climate fight. I strongly want to distance myself from that, says Hauge. In 1987, the Bellona co-founder was one of those who occupied the office of Environment Minister Sissel Rønbeck. He is nevertheless critical of some of the new methods of climate activists today. – Our actions have gone peacefully. Together with Nature and Youth, we have stood for non-violent traditions. Some of what we see today challenges that, says Hauge. Joachim Skahjem was one of those who went to the Monolith last week. Tonight he defended the use of strong remedies in the fight against climate change. Loss of life is not excluded. Skahjem drew parallels to the Second World War, when resistance fighters such as Max Manus and Gunnar Sønsteby used violence in their struggle. – I think we are all happy about it today. It happened then, it may have to happen again. Lives can also be lost in the climate resistance, but I hope not. Frederic Hauge visibly expressed astonishment. – This shows why we should not take what is happening now too lightly. Not setting a limit by force is serious, it is completely unacceptable. This should be fought as hard as possible, says Hauge. Taking drastic action Recently, climate activists have carried out a number of actions to draw attention to what they believe is a climate crisis that is not being taken seriously by the authorities.
