The Shift to Advertising in ChatGPT

The day has finally arrived: ChatGPT is starting to show advertising in the United States! Currently in a testing phase, this move could signify a shift in OpenAI’s strategy as they work to clean up their financials. If they plan to expand this model globally, it might just be the catalyst I needed to make a definitive switch to Google’s Gemini.

From Ugly Duckling to Goose That Lays Golden Eggs

Reflecting on this transition, one can’t help but recall just two years ago when considering Gemini over ChatGPT would have met with outright refusal from me. Fast forward to today, and the competition has dramatically changed. Recent benchmarks reveal that Gemini has surpassed GPT-5, all while maintaining its strong reasoning capabilities.

Impressive Advancements in Creation Technologies

Additionally, Google is not merely standing still. Its innovative work in image and video creation, exemplified by tools like the Nano Banana Pro, has significantly outperformed OpenAI’s efforts. This progression has compelled OpenAI to enhance ChatGPT’s functionalities by integrating image capabilities, placing greater emphasis on competitive features.

Cost Analysis: What’s on Offer?

As AI becomes a necessary expense for millions globally, it raises the question of value for money. For instance, ChatGPT’s entry plan, known as Go, costs 8 euros per month, totaling 96 euros annually. This offers access to GPT-5 along with expanded memory and file loading limits.

On the other hand, Google’s AI Plus subscription is slightly cheaper at 7.99 euros per month. This plan includes access to innovative features like Gemini 3 Pro and Nano Banana Pro, along with a variety of integrations and 200 GB of storage for Google services.

Why Google Holds the Upper Hand

Google has a unique advantage when pricing its AI services. Unlike OpenAI, which operates primarily on AI sales, Google can afford to integrate AI into its existing services for free. By doing so, it makes AI an integral part of its ecosystem, minimizing the need for advertising, as the AI itself serves as an advertisement.

What’s Next for OpenAI?

OpenAI is now at a crossroads. With Gemini’s customer base growing rapidly and the impending introduction of ads in ChatGPT, OpenAI must work hard to demonstrate the value of its service. Users will want to see compelling reasons to:

  • Pay for the more expensive plans that exclude ads
  • Continue with plans that incorporate ads

Ultimately, the current landscape signals a pivotal change in the AI service arena. As the competition heats up, consumers will undoubtedly proceed with cautious optimism, weighing their options carefully.
