26 September 2022 at 17:49 Wants Bandy World Cup without Russia Sweden hopes to organize a long-awaited Bandy World Cup in 2023. In that case, it will be without Russian participation. The Men’s Bandy WC has not been held since 2019. The pandemic and Russia’s warfare in Ukraine have stopped the event in recent years. Now Sweden is working on organizing a World Cup in 2023. Reigning champion Russia will not be invited to that championship, writes SVT. The plan is instead that Finland, Norway, Kazakhstan, the USA, Germany, Estonia and Hungary will make up the participants. Still, organizing a World Cup without Russia is not without problems. The country has long had a lot to say in international bandy, among other things in the form of several board representatives in the International Bandy Federation (FIB). Pär Gustafsson, secretary general of the Swedish Bandy Federation, nevertheless says that a 2023 WC in Sweden will have official status anyway. – It will be a WC just like any other, fully sanctioned internationally. It would mean a lot if the World Cup is organised, as it will show that bandy works despite the world situation, he says to the Swedish public broadcaster.
