Tonje Hennig, who runs Hundelykke behavior centre, shares her best tips. Behavioral therapist Tonje Henning tells how you can take care of your dog this summer. Photo: Håvard Rustøl / news Be careful in the heat Tonje Henning’s very first tip is to be careful when it’s hot, because dogs don’t get rid of excess heat by sweating, like we do. – When they get hot, they pant a lot, and then they also lose fluid. So they must always have access to clean and cold water. Another tip is frozen treats that provide both liquid and cooling. – Fill a king with some food and some snacks, fill with water and put in the freezer. In the heat, one should also be careful on hot asphalt, which can give the dog burns under its paws. – If you are in doubt as to whether it is too hot, put your wrist against the asphalt and count to eight. If it gets too hot, choose gravel or a green surface instead. Some breeds run hotter than others, such as black dogs. But many dogs with a lot of fur also have wool, which actually regulates the heat well. Therefore, ask your vet whether it is beneficial to cut the dog or not, as this depends on the breed. Photo: Robert Greiner/news Dangers in nature In nature there are also several things that you should avoid or watch out for. – Steer clear of salt water, because dogs can actually get salt poisoning. If the dog drinks while swimming, I recommend fresh water. In the forest, vipers can be a threat. – The rule is to go to the vet as soon as possible, and let the dog move as little as possible, so that the poison does not spread in the circulatory system. The worst is a bite on the face, because dogs swell up a lot and then the throat can close. This year is also a real tick year. – Ticks carry an infection that the dog can ingest. It is therefore important that they are treated with tick medicine. Check the dog after walks and roll over the fur with a clothes roll before they sit down. There is no reason to steer clear of the forest this summer, but give your dog tick medicine and watch out for vipers. Photo: Elin Skaar / news Dog at the cabin Regardless of where the dog is, it is happy to maintain routines with activation and rest time, Henning points out. – Many people and children who think it’s extra cool to have a dog can lead to a lot of attention, but too little rest. The dog can quickly become stressed, beep more and bark. Give it a chance to pull away. Most places require a leash, but in a cabin with plenty of space or in the mountains, it is possible to give the dog some freedom. – A long line of 12 to 17 meters is great. Then the dog can run a bit while you are in control. You are welcome to bring the dog to the cabin and to visit, but make sure that it maintains good routines and gives it enough rest. Photo: Private Dog on the beach According to Tonje Henning, spending a day in the middle of a crowded beach is certainly not suitable for all dogs. – Some people think it’s great fun with a lot of life, while others get stressed. In that case, you have to make arrangements for the dog, and perhaps stay a bit on the edge of the beach. On the beach, it is of course also important to take extra care when it is hot. – Enough water and shade! Even if you have a short-haired dog that likes heat, it must have access to shade. If you don’t find this natural, then pitch a tent. If you are going to bring your dog to the beach, it is important to have access to shade and water. Activate the dog What kind of activity the dog needs on holiday depends on the breed. Some need to run, some are happy to wander around a bit, while others need to use their nose. – If you have a dog that needs a lot of exercise, find areas in the yard where it can play a little. Possibly let the dog pull with a harness and bicycle, if it is physically fit. If the dog is physically fit, she recommends letting the dog walk with a hoof, or pull on a leash or slow down for a run. The most important thing is that the dog gets an outlet for what it was created for. Swimming with water retrieval, where the dog can swim and fetch things, can also be a nice activity. Hennig himself has two Hungarian Wizzles who are bird dogs and need a lot of exercise. Then trekking or swimming can be good alternatives. Photo: Håvard Raustøl / news Steer clear of barbecue food It’s barbecue season and many people throw away food scraps in parks. The dog should not have spices, salt and fat at all. – It can become loose in the stomach and diarrhea can actually be a bit dangerous for the dog. If it doesn’t go away after a day or there is blood in the stool, you should see a vet, says Henning. It is particularly unfortunate if the dog ingests chops or chicken bones. – Chicken bones become very sharp and can, in the worst case, puncture the stomach. And for those who have to look after a dog and want to be a little extra reasonable with it, choose something other than human food. – I would much rather recommend giving it a new toy or treats that are intended for dogs, says Henning. Stay at home? Veterinarian and general manager of Animal Protection Norway, Åshild Roaldset, says that people generally take very good care of their dogs, but that it is worse with other animals. – It is worse with cats and rabbits, who are left behind or dumped to a much greater extent. It happens every single year, she says. Veterinarian and general manager of Animal Protection Norway Åshild Roaldset, says all animals have the same protection in our legislation. Photo: Anne K. Harkestad / Animal protection – If you were to give one piece of advice to those who have pets in connection with summer and holidays, what would it be? – It is important that the pet is in mind when planning the holiday. Sometimes it is perhaps best that the animal stays at home and that you get someone to look after it. If you don’t have a good alternative for your pet, you can’t go away. She points out that this applies regardless of whether you have a dog, cat, rabbit, turtle, snake or bird. – This applies to all animals. They have the same protection in our legislation and their needs must be taken care of, says Roaldset. Published 11.07.2024, at 11.07
