How to prepare your house and garden before winter – news Innlandet – Local news, TV and radio

The gardening season is over, and it’s time to get the house and garden ready for winter. At Øivind Lie’s home in Servicemesteren at Gjøvik, everything is already ready. – Winter can only come here, says Lie. Now he is working hard to make blocks, gardens and other people’s outdoor areas ready for snow and freezing temperatures. Have you prepared for winter? ❄️ Yep, I’m ready No, probably have to work a little until No. I haven’t started this yet Show result These are Lie’s ten best tips for you who want to get ready for winter – whether you have a house, car or garden: Wash the windows before the frost comes Many people wash the windows in the spring, but don’t forget the autumn! If the windows are dirty when the frost has arrived, you should wait a long time before washing them. It is not recommended to wash the windows in winter, as the water can freeze. – For me, it is not enough to wash windows once a year. Wash them too before winter comes, says Lie. Wash the windows before the frost arrives, Lie recommends. If necessary, apply oil or other impregnation to the furniture before it is sheltered from the weather – for example under a tarpaulin, or in the garage if you have space. Remove dirt and grime from the outdoor furniture and put it away from the weather. That is the recommendation from Øivind Lie. But, when you scrub the grill, you scrub away all the grease. Then it’s a good idea to put grease back in the grill, so that it doesn’t rust. Also place the grill in a shelter from the weather, and preferably cover it with a cover or tarpaulin. Remember the water hose Many have wall-mounted “dispensers” with a garden hose. – It is important to empty them of water. Otherwise it freezes and cracks during the winter, says Lie. The garden hose should be stored indoors during the winter. Don’t forget to close and empty the outside tap. This prevents the frost from bursting the pipes or causing leaks into the house. Speaking of water! Prevent water locks, pipes, drains and drains from freezing. Don’t forget the cabin and the caravan. Prevent by adding suitable antifreeze and drain opener. Cut the grass Do you have a lawn? Or maybe a slope in the garden with grass? Then you should cut it now. – Then it will be more comfortable for the children to sled in the winter. And you will feel so much nicer in the spring. – Do not mow the lawn too low or too high. Cut it just right, no shorter than five centimeters. Then it gets nourishment and is fine through the winter, says Lie. A sure sign of autumn is leaves on the ground, but it is also a sign that your lawn needs care. A thick layer of leaves can suffocate the grass, so be sure to rake away the leaves. Rake the leaves off the lawn before the snow settles. Check the gutter A full gutter can freeze or become blocked when the rain and cold come. – It is important that the gutter, gutter and downspout are open, so that the water is directed the right way, says Lie. This applies both to autumn rain, but not least when the snow is about to melt in the spring. Don’t forget the awning! The awning, and parasols for that matter, should be cleaned before winter. – This summer it has rained, and then it has mostly been inside. When it is now sunny and dry, you should take out the awning so that it can dry. Then you avoid mould, fungus and other oddities, says Lie. He recommends using a cloth or a broom to go over the awning, but avoid rinsing it. When the awning is clean and dry, apply any impregnation. Remove dead plants and get the pots ready for spring Jars and pots with soil and flowers in them can freeze to pieces during a cold winter. Therefore, make sure that both plants and soil are removed from the pot or jar before the freezing temperatures drop. – Throw the dead flower away with the garden waste, and wash the pot. Then it’s ready for spring, says Lie. Prepare your car – Put the ice scraper in the car already now. How many times have we woken up in the morning with a credit card or a CD cover and icy fingertips? Be prepared that the frost can come suddenly overnight. Get it an ice scraper and put it in the car now. Photo: Ulf Palm / NTB scanpix Also check your winter tyres. Do you need new tires? Find it out now, and not when “everyone” else discovers it in the first snow, is the call from Lie. Find the snow bucket Even if the snow hasn’t settled yet, it’s a good idea to find the snow bucket already now. Because then you know where you have it, the morning you wake up to half a meter of snow outside the door. – It is not terribly long until the snow arrives, so find it now, is the advice from Lie.
