Because the plants need you, and you need the plants to dig a little in the soil and feel that you are alive. If you clean up your plants, you will see what they need and can prepare for spring, says Mellingen. 1. What do you do before the snow comes? Some summer flowers are in flower all summer. One day there will be frost, and then you can clear them away. The perennials are perennial, they come back year after year. They wither, but rise again. Summer flowers are annuals, so when the frost comes, it’s over. The advantage of summer flowers is that they bloom all the time, while perennials often have one month in which they bloom. They first turn brown, and then they turn black. Then you can remove some weeds at the same time. 3. What must you bring in before winter If you want a geranium or an olive tree to survive, you must bring them in. They must be kept frost-free and preferably in a bit of light, because they will not survive the winter outside. If you have a room you don’t use, or a basement with a window, you can use it. Then you get crushed leaves and grass, because the remaining leaves are very good for your lawn. Photo: Petter Melsom / news 5. Remember to cut down on the apple tree Apple trees tolerate being cut down all year round, and you must try to make it as airy as possible. Keep branches that go outwards and downwards. And cut away part of the branches that go up. It is usual to do it in January, because then you can take care of branches that have been broken by the snow. Photo: Heidi Sivertzen-Oksmo / news 6. Your hedge is too big Normal hedges tolerate being cut at any time. But if you have a hedge that flowers, it is usually good to cut it just after flowering. A lilac hedge is best cut just after flowering, because then you will also get flowering next year.
