The European Super Cup: A Celebration of Football in Frioul-Vénétie Julienne
This summer, the Julienne Frioul-Vénétie region basked in international attention as it hosted the European Super Cup, held at the Stadio Friuli. The prestigious event took place on Wednesday evening, featuring Paris Saint-Germain, the winners of the Champions League, against Tottenham Hotspur, the Europa League champions. As early as the end of July, the region had embraced the colors of this much-anticipated event, thanks to a collaborative effort involving Promoturismo FVG, the local government, the Italian Football Federation, and UEFA.
From Gorizia to Trieste, including scenic spots like Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro, the tour of three prestigious trophies attracted thousands of curious fans eager to capture the moment. Spectacular installations, including giant balloons and a four-meter-high trophy displayed in Piazza San Giacomo, enhanced the festive atmosphere. The presence of renowned athletes, including Olympic champion Jonathan Milan, further added to the excitement, creating a “trophy experience” that was both friendly and unifying.
Significance of the Event
“This is an extremely important event, followed by 22 million viewers during its previous edition. Choosing Udine to host the final of the European Super Cup 2025 is a recognition of our region’s facilities, logistical advantages, and experience in organizing large-scale events,” said Massimiliano Fedriga, President of the Frioul-Vénétie Julienne region. The entire city prepared for this momentous occasion, adorned with stunning visual displays, including giant balloons showcasing the colors of the competition to generate local enthusiasm.
A Tailor-Made Program
In Udine, the UEFA Fan Festival transformed Piazza Libertà on August 12th and 13th into a vibrant gathering spot. This lively atmosphere included sports, games, concerts, and activities catering to all ages. Supporters of both PSG and Tottenham established their respective bases at Paro Moretti and Piazza Primo Maggio, featuring catering options, DJ sets, and thematic animations to intensify the excitement leading to the match kickoff scheduled for 9 p.m. The streets of Udine resonated with jubilant songs, confirmed by the active participation of local clubs and athletes who proudly carried the “Io Sono Friuli Venezia Giulia” brand.
Not only was the Super Cup a thrilling sporting event, but it was also envisioned as a cultural and tourist showcase for the Julienne Frioul-Vénétie region. Through the “Match ticket = cultural passport” initiative, ticket holders and their companions had access to discounts at various museums and historic sites, such as the Aquilée Basilica and the Château de Gorizia. Free audio guides enhanced the exploration in several cities, while seaside locations like Lignano Sabbiadoro and Grado boasted their summer promotions. The synergy between sports, culture, and tourism created an atmosphere of unity and openness throughout the region, underscoring that even before the match began, the European Super Cup 2025 was already a resounding success for Frioul-Vénétie.
Community Involvement and Security Measures
The municipality of Udine provided local businesses, restaurants, public facilities, and personal services unique visibility alongside the Promoturismo FVG hospitality page. The official UEFA site redirected spectators to this page, allowing all local companies that registered before July 31 to promote their offers to thousands of visitors and ticket holders. “Udine is gearing up to host a major international sporting event, and we want the entire city to actively participate in this celebration. Local businesses are crucial for ensuring a warm welcome, and this initiative allows them to connect directly with the visitors flocking to Udine for the Super Cup,” stated Deputy Mayor Alessandro Venanzi.
To ensure safety, Police Chief Pasquale Antonio de Lorenzo coordinated with the Ministry of the Interior, allocating around 1,000 agents for the event, including approximately 600 foreign agents. Specialized personnel, such as deminers and riot control units, along with helicopters equipped with video systems, ensured maximum security during the high-risk match. UEFA revealed that 6,600 tickets were sold to French supporters and 4,700 to English fans, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere filled with international energy.
As the European Super Cup unfolded under the summer sky of Frioul-Vénétie Julienne, it set the stage for unforgettable moments that would echo in the memories of fans, participants, and the local community alike. The ties between sport, culture, and tourism created a lasting impact, marking the event not just as a competition but as a celebration of unity and passion for football that will resonate for years to come. The jubilation, strong community involvement, and enthusiastic spirit showcased during this period serve as a testament to the enduring love for the beautiful game.
