The Iconic Zegama-Aizkorri Trail Running Race

Every year in May,  Zegama  transforms into the global hub of  trail running . Known for its remarkable atmosphere, the wild route coursing through the  Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park , and the deep connection between the mountainous terrain and its passionate fans, this race has become the most iconic event on the trail running calendar. Amidst the mud, records, and epic adventures, many ask:  how much prize money does the champion of Zegama earn?

A Surprising Answer

The answer may come as a surprise. In a sport still striving for professional status, the  cash prizes at Zegama-Aizkorri  are modest compared to those in other disciplines. However, they carry a  symbolic and emotional value  that is immeasurable.

20,400 Euros in Prizes: The Zegama Reward Structure

In recent years, the event has become part of the  Golden Trail World Series , amplifying its international reach. Nevertheless, the financial distribution remains true to its roots: rewarding performance without losing the soul of  trail running .

In the 2025 edition, the  male and female winners  will each receive  3,000 euros and a txapela , symbolizing their status as champions. The  second-place finisher  will earn 2,000 euros, while the third-place runner will take home 1,000 euros. The prize money continues to decrease for the following positions, tapering down to  300 euros for those crossing the finish line in tenth place . In total,  20,400 euros in prizes  will be distributed among both absolute categories.

There are also awards for  top veterans , local runners, and Basque athletes, typically in the form of trophies and recognitions.

More Glory than Money

The story of Zegama demonstrates that the true reward lies elsewhere.  Winning this race means entering legend . Kilian Jornet, a frequent victor, has taken home the title eleven times. Notably, in the magical 2022 edition, he clocked an astonishing  3:36:40 , setting a record that still stands unbroken. That same year,  Nienke Brinkman  etched her name in history with her time of  4:16:43 , the best ever recorded for women.

Zegama is not a race run for money. It is run for  passion , for the roar of  Sancti Spiritu , for the honor of soaring through the mud, and for the privilege of wearing the txapela.

The Community Spirit of Zegama

What sets Zegama apart is its sense of community. The race attracts not just competitors but also a passionate crowd that gathers to support each athlete. The locals create an atmosphere filled with excitement, energy, and camaraderie that can be felt throughout the complex network of steep climbs and descents. This unity between the mountain lovers and participants elevates the race experience beyond mere competition.

The local culture plays a crucial role in the event, with spectators often making it a festive occasion complete with music, local food, and a shared spirit that encompasses both the runners and the audience. This is what makes Zegama not just a race but a profound experience where every competitor becomes part of a larger story.

Global and Local Impact of Zegama

Being part of the  Golden Trail World Series  has not only bolstered Zegama’s popularity globally but has also reinforced its local significance. Athletes from all over the world converge here, infusing a sense of international prestige. However, despite this global attention, the essence of local culture remains intact. The race has managed to hold on to its community roots while simultaneously embracing the expansion of its international profile.

As interest in trail running continues to grow worldwide, events like Zegama serve as a benchmark for future competitions. The balance of maintaining a local spirit while catering to an international audience is a delicate one, but Zegama appears to navigate this with remarkable effectiveness.

The Future of Trail Running in Zegama

The future of trail running, particularly in Zegama, seems bright. As the sport evolves and more individuals recognize its value, we can expect ongoing improvements in organization, sponsorship, and overall appeal. The Zegama race is likely to inspire younger generations of athletes to engage in the sport, thus securing a robust future for  trail running .

With the focus on both performance and the community, Zegama stands out as a unique model in an increasingly commercialized sports environment, reminding us that the essence of athletic competition lies not solely in monetary rewards but in  passion ,  community , and the joy of the experience.
