1 August 2024 at 16:40 Horrific statistics, end of crisis and weather chaos for Hovland Norwegian golf star Viktor Hovland is well behind the leader after the opening round of the Olympics. Much of the reason for that is lousy putting and a nightmare on the last hole. – I struggled to read the greens today, says Hovland to news after the first day of competition in the Olympics. Just as Hovland was about to tee off on the last hole, the Norwegian and the rest of the Olympic golfers were sent off the course due to thunderstorms. About half an hour later, play started again, but Hovland went two strokes over par on the last hole and fell to joint 29th place. After the opening round, he is one shot under par. – It’s not that nice. It’s the most difficult hole on the course, so it’s a bit in the back of your mind, says Hovland to news. – That says everything about the day. It is so destructive to the mood, said Max commentator Per Haugsrud. Especially on the green, Hovland gave away many shots. With the putter, he was the second weakest of all 60 players, and lost over three strokes to the best. – Miserable putting on Viktor’s part, that is, said Haugsrud during the round. – It’s on strike, that putter, said co-commentator Henrik Bjørnstad. Hovland himself is not too worried about the putting: – I feel that can suddenly be solved tomorrow. I’m not too worried about that, but hopefully I can give myself some birdie opportunities. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama leads the Olympic tournament at eight strokes under par after the completed round. He is closely followed by reigning Olympic champion Xander Schauffele. The American is six strokes under par, while three players follow in bronze place a further stroke behind.
