– Come and get me! – Are they coming to pick me up? The voice on the phone is small and thin. It is six-year-old Hind we hear. The conversation has been published by the Palestinian Red Crescent. The recording has not been verified by news or other sources. Due to Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip, foreign journalists are not allowed into the area. Hind will sit in a car with six dead family members. They were on their way out of Gaza City, after being told to evacuate. – I’m so scared. Please come and get me. In the audio recording, several shots are heard, and Hind says that a tank is approaching the car she is sitting in. The woman on the other end works at the emergency center of the Palestinian Red Crescent. She asks if the tanks are close. – Very. Will you come and get me? I’m so scared. – Yes, my friend. We will pick you up, the woman replies. Earlier in the day, the Israeli army had asked the residents of Gaza City to evacuate. The adults in Hind’s family decided to travel to a hospital east of the city. They hoped it would be safe there. WANTED TO BECOME A DOCTOR: Hind Rajab’s greatest wish was to become a doctor and help people, the mother tells CNN. Photo: PRCS But there wasn’t room for everyone in the car. It was raining and cold. The mother told the BBC that she therefore wanted Hind to sit in the car with her uncle, aunt and the four cousins. Mora Wisam and Hind’s sister traveled on foot. – We fled from town to town to avoid the air raids, says the mother. Back in the car, the family called relatives outside Gaza. They say that they must have bumped into Israeli forces, and are asking for help. The relatives contact the Red Crescent center in Vestbreidda, which in turn calls the family in the car. They first get hold of 15-year-old Layan, who is sitting next to Hind in the car. Layan says that now both her parents and siblings have been killed. At this point, only her and her cousin, six-year-old Hind, are alive. Then several shots are heard. Layan screams in terror. Then it gets quiet. – Hello? hello? The male voice receives no response. Then Hind picks up the phone. Now Layan is also dead, along with all the others in the car, she says. – We kept the conversation going. We were afraid that she would get hurt, so we asked her to stay in the car. Hide there. That’s what health worker Rana Faqih, who is one of those who spoke to Hind, says. To The Washington Post, she says that she has worked with crisis management for the Palestinian Red Crescent since 2009, but that this situation was new. Never before has she spoken to such a young girl in such a precarious situation. For several hours, Hind Rajab sat in a car with six dead family members. Mora tried to reassure her by phone. Photo: Private Nisreen Qawwas, head of the Red Crescent’s department for mental health, gradually takes over the conversation. She is said to have instructed Hind in breathing exercises, and to have added the mother to the conversation. They must have talked about the sun, the sea and her favorite cake, chocolate cake. – I told her that we were going to be with her every second, says Nisreen, who says that Hind hung up several times, frustrated that no one came. Hind is said to have said that she could see a tank outside the car, and that it was getting closer and closer. Raude Halvmåne contacted the Israeli Defense Forces to be allowed to drive into the closed military zone. Eventually they also managed to get hold of an ambulance. In the ambulance are Youssef Zaino and Ahmed Al-Madhoun. Before the ambulance approaches, it starts to get dark. Yousef Zaino traveled into the war zone to retrieve Hind. On Saturday he was also found dead. Photo: PRCS They also have contact with the Red Crescent on Vestbreidda when they drive towards the car, but tell them that they are about to be controlled by Israeli soldiers. Both Red Crescent and mother are on the phone line with Hind. She says that she can see the ambulance approaching. The last thing the mother hears is the car door being opened, the grandfather told the BBC. But this was the last one heard. Both from six-year-old Hind and from the two men in the ambulance. Neither Red Crescent nor anyone else in the family has since managed to get to the area where the car is supposed to be. But today came the message Wisam had feared. Hind and the two ambulance workers Yousef Zaino and Ahmed Al-Madhoun are said to have been found dead, along with the rest of the family. This is confirmed by the Red Crescent on X. Al Jazeera has correspondents inside Gaza, who are said to have seen both the destroyed car, the ambulance and the bodies of the family. They have published videos of what is supposed to be the ambulance and the car that the family was in, both completely damaged. news has time and city verified the videos. The Israeli army has told CNN that they are not aware of the case, but that they will investigate it. news has not been successful in getting in touch with them.
