The jury has now selected three publishers for the 22 July memorial in front of the Government Quarter. The task was to create a national, permanent memorial site after the terrorist attack. This is what the top three suggestions look like: “A memorial garden for 22 July” by Henning Sunde, Hanne Tyrmi and Rainer Stange. They want to create a frozen landscape that gives warmth and faith in the future. The idea came from the steel rig that was built to move the Pablo Picasso work from the torn Y block. Photo: Matias Faldbakken / KORO This proposal was made by Raqs Media Collective. Time and movement become the theme, in the form of clocks and birds. Representatives from AUF and the national support group after 22 July are also there. The state body Art in public spaces (KORO) is responsible for all art that will enter the new government quarter. Marianne Borgen leads the jury that will choose a memorial site for the Government Quarter in the spring. And it must accommodate the political dimension of terror and the importance of strengthening and building democracies. It should also give hope. Matias Faldbakken wants to create a monumental sculpture, and has various ideas about what the rig can be filled with. We also hope that the public will look at this, be curious and make suggestions. The jury will certainly listen to that, says Borgen. The way forward The artists will continue to work on their proposals in the coming months. On 15 January 2025, they must deliver finished drafts. In February, the drafts of what the memorial site will look like will be on display in the 22 July Center for the public to see. – Then we will see when they have worked their way up to more concrete models what the jury ultimately chooses, says Borgen. The winner will be announced in the first half of March. No date has yet been set for when the memorial site will be ready. Published 06.09.2024, at 07.02
