With the help of information from various channels, Norwegian police have averted serious crime linked to Swedish criminals. – It is up to the most serious, that is murder. That’s what Kjetil Tunold says, who is section leader at the section for organized crime in Kripos. He says that he cannot go into individual cases, but says that it is about orders to kill. CONCERN: Kjetil Tunold, head of the section for organized crime at Kripos, is concerned about the situation with Swedish criminals in Norway Photo: Petter Larsson / news Kripos is concerned about the situation with Swedish criminals in Norway. – We have seen an increase in both frequency and severity. The threat is present throughout the country. There are two areas in particular that Kripos is worried about: Swedish criminals who try to establish their own drug business, possibly in collaboration with Norwegian criminal networks. Swedes who carry out violence on assignment in Norway, often on orders from Norwegian criminal networks. The Norwegian police are concerned that Swedish criminals are gaining a greater foothold in Norway. Photo: Tor Erik Schrøder / NTB – It will be a devastating, negative spiral in terms of crime in Norway, and bring us to a greater extent in the direction of what has been the development in Sweden in recent years. Murder on contract Crime reports that acts of violence are often ordered by older, established masterminds who are located abroad. The assignment is posted on various digital platforms, then someone accepts and the conversation continues more privately. What kind of orders are we talking about? – There are orders for murder. – What we have seen in Sweden is that there are young people under the age of 18, who often live in various institutions, who were hired by older, established actors to carry out assignments on their behalf. Tunold explains that this is also something they have seen in Norway. – That younger Swedes have come to carry out assignments, and then to order. More young people kill in Sweden On Thursday, Aftenposten told the Swedish 15-, 16- and 17-year-olds who are prosecuted for murder or attempted murder is increasing dramatically: In 2022 there were 46 defendants, so far this year there are 129. COLLABORATION: Karin Breding, is assistant manager of the Swedish police’s efforts against criminal networks, and believes that cooperation in the Nordic region is important. Photo: Petter Larsson / news Karin Breding is assistant head of the Swedish police’s ongoing efforts against criminal networks, Frigg. She believes that cooperation between the countries is important to avoid escalation. – We see that the young people who take these assignments also choose to cross the borders and commit crimes in Norway and Denmark, says Breding. – It hurts my heart very much that children shoot children, she says. Breding says that the recruitment takes place, among other things, on social media. – Where young people like or look at posts from e.g. rappers who post what it’s like to be a criminal and have a criminal lifestyle. A bit like criminal influencers, says Breding. Children who like the posts can then be contacted and eventually attempted to be recruited to commit crimes. news has previously investigated the connection between rap and crime in Sweden. Priority area Organized crime is a priority part of police work, says Tunold. – The criminal networks have nothing to do in Norwegian society. This is according to Sigve Bolstad, state secretary in the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness, who shares Kripos’s concern. In the revised national budget, the police received NOK 300 million for strengthened efforts against criminal networks this year. The investment will continue with NOK 600 million until next year. Tunold believes the extra money that has come from the government is helping. – It contributes to that fight. Collaboration across the agency and with the Swedish police is also highlighted as important. – We depend on the Swedes succeeding in fighting crime, says Bolstad.
