– It could have gone really wrong, admits Simen Guttormsen. On Tuesday, the bronze medalist from the National Championships was in place in Swedish Täby for an outdoor pole vault competition. He put pressure on several strong competitors and set a personal record with 5.72 in the first attempt. Then the 21-year-old set the list at 5.82 to break big brother Sondre Guttormsen’s personal record. VISIBLE: Simen Guttormsen got a visible bang when the list turned his eye. But the list rotates a little to one side, attaches to the bottom of the mat and stays straight up and down. It hits me, and scrapes up along the eye, but fortunately does not sit there, Guttormsen describes. – It could have been much worse if it was stuck more, and not just scratched, he continues. The big brother, who participates in what news broadcast the Diamond League conference in Stockholm on Thursday, was in place as a spectator. – He still sees, fortunately. Luck, or bad luck, I think we can call it, says Sondre Guttormsen. Jumped on STUDYING TOGETHER: Sondre and Simen Guttormsen both go to university in the USA. Photo: Steph Chambers / AFP The video shows that the pole vaulter’s head is thrown back and that he is only millimeters away from a really serious injury. – It looks like I almost see it there. But always when you tear, you have to be aware of where the rod and cunning are to get away. At first it looks like it’s going well, but the list changes direction in the millisecond before. He managed to think that he was happy it went well when he landed, but not before he jumped on film did he realize how dangerous close he had been. However, he did not let that stop him. Guttormsen got an ice pack on his eye and tried twice more at the same height – both with tears. – The adrenaline took over, and I could not think of the pain in my eye. There was nothing dangerous about it. It was a bit blurry, but otherwise fine, he says. – I expected to wake up bigger blue road today, but no, it looks more like I’ve been in a barfight, he adds with a little laugh. Two brothers in the World Cup The Guttormsen brothers are both studying at Ivy League University Princeton in the USA. Now both are ready for the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. Little brother is in fact in the ranking. THREE NORWEGIANS IN THE WC: Pål Haugen Lillefosse took the NC gold last weekend, ahead of the Guttormsen brothers. Now all three are ready for the World Cup. Photo: Stian Lysberg Solum / NTB – I am really looking forward to the first senior championship, and have shown that I am in good shape and ready to show myself. If I get three more good training weeks, then I do not rule out that a World Cup final may be possible. It can be exciting, Guttormsen thinks, and gets support from big brother. – It’s going to be a lot of fun. Right now he has jumped as well as me, so I have a lot to learn from him too. Then I get to teach him a little about experience, because I have participated in a few more championships and the Diamond League. Watch Diamond League from Stockholm on NRK1 on Thursday from 20.00.
