Gray geese have become a major dung problem around the Tyrifjord – news Oslo og Viken – Local news, TV and radio

– When many individuals come onto private lawns, it can look like you’ve had a kennel meeting with several dogs. Then you can imagine for yourself what it looks like… Richard Baksvær, head of the wildlife commission in Ringerike, drew this beautiful picture. The individuals he refers to are greylag geese. The problem with these winged, grazing and bedraggled gakk-gakks is that they belch: “Gee, we can! and leave behind their sticky business cards, on an ever-increasing scale. Are you bothered by greylag geese or other bird species that invade your garden? Feel free to leave a greeting in the comment field at the bottom of the case. To survey the piggery The municipalities around the Tyrifjord – Hole, Lier, Modum, Ringerike and Sigdal – will have absolutely nothing of such a dung problem. Geese, and especially Canada and greylag geese, are a growing problem around Tyrifjorden, which is an important area for nesting geese. Every year, a felling permit is granted for gray and Canada geese, the birds that cause headaches and financial losses for agriculture and the tourism industry. That’s what Ringerike municipality writes. Leader of the wildlife commission in Ringerike, Richard Baksvær. Photo: Privat Such felling is, however, not desirable. The municipality wants more of the felling to take place during the ordinary hunt. But there is little tradition of goose hunting in Ringerike. The municipality wants a management plan to create a better basis for this. – For some areas, it is not unnatural to think that damage reduction may be relevant, says Baksvær. Conflict and felling permit The five municipalities around the Tyrifjord collaborate on a so-called regional management plan for geese. This means that “mapping of grazing and fouling damage” must now be done. With a wingspan of up to 180 centimeters and a weight of up to 4.5 kilograms, the greylag goose is the largest and heaviest of the grey-brown geese. Photo: Åsmund Asphaug – How does the mapping work? – We are reaching out to landowners and residents to get as much information as possible that they know about gray geese in their local area. Where they nest and the number of individuals, answers the head of the wildlife committee. In this connection, the municipality has created a survey in which residents are encouraged to answer. Baksvær adds that the wildlife commission has “harvested experience over a few years”, so that they have formed a picture of the gray goose’s range. He mentions geese that are born, for example, in the center of Hønefoss, in an area that is close to both open spaces, housing associations, detached houses and the road network, which quickly becomes a problem. – Then they come back again when they are adults and breed further. It may start with a few, and then quickly become several hundreds. And hundreds of that huge birds that … yes. The dear reader is able to form a picture of the “kennel meeting”. Hello!
