Google is building a huge data center in Skien – news Vestfold and Telemark – Local news, TV and radio

The news will be confirmed by Google at a press conference in Skien on Wednesday afternoon. Both representatives from Google and digitization minister Karianne Oldernes Tung (Ap) are present. Have been waiting in anticipation Back in August 2019, the news came that Google had bought a plot of almost 2,000 acres at Gromstul, north of the center of Skien. At that time, the plot, which is located in the middle of the Skau, was already regulated for commercial purposes. This happened in 2018. Since then, there has been great excitement about what the multinational data giant would decide on. They have kept the timing of the final investment decision close to their chests. Until now. Google establishes itself in Skien. Photo: AP Shared opinions Many hope the establishment will become one of Skien’s most important cornerstone companies, and generate a large number of new jobs. Not least the majority of local politicians. When Google bought the site in 2019, the municipality and politicians celebrated with half a cake. The other half was put in the freezer until the day the company made the decision to invest in a data center. Now it’s time to open the lid again. Others believe it is a disaster for nature and the environment. Among other things, because they believe the center will become a giant power drain. The Nature Conservancy recently told news that they believe the project is a threat to the environment. Among the population, there have also been divided opinions about the new centre, which is now becoming a reality. This was shown by an opinion poll conducted by Norstat on behalf of news in the spring of 2023. 37 percent answered that the respondents were in favor of the construction, while 31 percent were against it. 24 percent had no opinion on the matter. Huge need Pictures. Video. Documents, music, email and search history. Even what is deleted digitally must, in theory, find a place somewhere. There are almost no limits to the activities most people have become addicted to in our digital everyday life, and everything must be saved. The “cloud” where, for example, your family photos are often stored, is not, strictly speaking, a real cloud. Google handles a solid lion’s share of this worldwide, and now a large part of it will be handled in Norway. Huge servers and storage systems need people, and not least space. That place has therefore been found a few kilometers outside the center of Skien.
