A motorist who saw the cloud of smoke reported the rockfall at 11.23am. No one should be hit by the landslide. E16 through Aurland is one of the main routes between Aust- and Vestland. – It is depicted as a large stone block, and in terms of size it can be compared to a Volkswagen Transporter standing across the road, says operations manager Tore André Brakstad at the West police district. STAIN BLOCK: The stone block blocking the E16 should be the size of a Volkswagen Transporter. Photo: The Norwegian Public Roads Administration informs that the road is closed. A new assessment is expected at 8 p.m., and it is now too early to say whether the road will be open then. Both the Onstad and Fretheim tunnels are also closed. – The police and fire brigade have just arrived on the scene. It may appear that the stone has not come from a great height, but has come loose in the area close to the road, says Brakstad. Geologist and contractor are on their way to assess whether there may be more, or whether they can start clean-up at the same time. The geologist is expected to arrive a little before 1pm. QUEUES: There has already become a long queue in the direction of the Flenja tunnel. Photo: Norwegian Public Roads Administration The motorist who reported the rockfall did not see for himself that the rock hit the road. – But he describes it as a cloud of smoke when he arrived, so the stone probably came down just before he arrived, says Brakstad. There is no local diversion road, so the Swedish Road Traffic Center recommends a diversion around Hardangervidda for those going between east and west.
