Giant battery in Lierne to save industry in places without power – news Trøndelag

You have probably used a power bank when your phone’s battery was low. The battery that was put into operation on Monday at the Jule business area in Lierne is not so different. It is just much larger and it supplies power for industrial production and not for a telephone. For a municipality that partially lacks power for industry and commercial activities, this is a good solution to secure electricity without a development costing several hundred million. – We have a business that does land-based farming and a bakery. Both companies want to expand, but the power capacity is too small. Now we hope this battery can help us. That’s what Reidar Bolling Rødli, mayor of Lierne municipality, says. Oil and Energy Minister Terje Aasland attended the ceremonial inauguration of the battery in Lierne on Monday. A mains battery is a giant power bank. If there is not enough electricity in a place to establish or expand a business, such a grid battery can make it possible. Then you can store electricity when there is a lot of it and use it when there is little. The grid battery in Lierne in Trøndelag has an installed power of about 1 Megawatt, and is located near the Jule industrial area. Jule industrial area today has both housing and industry, but no more available capacity. However, requests for more access to power for the establishment of power-intensive commercial activities are expected. Eidsiva and Tensio will now initiate tests of the battery service and further development of the service. Enough power for business He emphasizes that it is about badly needed jobs in the village. And there are several municipalities that struggle with the same as Lierne. The power producer Eidsiva knows this, and hopes that more electricity companies will rent such batteries from them when they now start commercial rental. Tensio is responsible for supplying electricity to most of the municipalities in Trøndelag and it is they who rent the battery in Lierne. – This is one of Norway’s largest battery installations in the power grid to date, and the very first commercial grid battery that grid companies can rent as a service. We believe it will be an effective new tool for network companies in Norway, as a cheaper alternative to network development, says CEO of Eidsiva, Øistein Andresen. Sufficient access to electricity is important for business in Lierne. Among other things for char farming at Blåfjell Lierne. Photo: Vegard Woll Andresen points out that industrial and commercial establishments require greater capacity than the existing power grid can often offer. Therefore, the queue at the network companies for the establishment of power-intensive industry and industry in Norway is getting longer and longer. An advantage for the investment costs Oil and Energy Minister Terje Aasland attended the opening of the battery and describes this as an exciting solution for the future. – It provides better utilization of the power grid, faster connection and can save us significant investment costs, says Aasland. He believes that such large batteries can facilitate power-intensive industries in parts of the power grid that otherwise would not have the necessary capacity. The country’s first battery to supply power to industry and workplaces could pave the way for more places in Norway where there is too little electricity. The battery project is in the very beginning phase and they do not yet know how much more power it will give them in Sørli. Sørli is the part of the municipality where the electricity capacity is too small. – The battery does not produce any electricity. But we know when production at the companies is low, then we have a surplus flow. Then it is very good if we can use it when production is at its maximum, says Rødli. The mayor also admits that they are probably not first in the queue to have the capacity expanded. Such a development will cost several hundreds of millions. – I also hope we can get more batteries if there are too few.
