On Wednesday, it became known that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has fired Germany’s Finance Minister Christian Linder. It happened after several months of disagreement between the three government parties SDP, FDP and The Greens, mainly over the state budget. A few hours later, Linder’s party FDP withdrew the rest of its ministers from the government. Scholz said he had offered Lindner a plan to reduce energy costs, increase investment and maintain support for Ukraine, but that the finance minister was unwilling to accept the plan. He accused Linder of being narrow-minded and selfish at a time of high uncertainty. To the German DLF, Economy Minister Robert Habeck from the Greens says that it was right and necessary to fire the finance minister. Scholz has now announced that he will ask cabinet questions in January. If he does not get a majority, there will be a new election in March 2025. Habeck says that the government can still function without problems in the meantime.
