Recent Gasoline Price Surge in Spain

This Tuesday, the price of gasoline in Spain reached 1.551 euros per liter, marking its highest level in nearly a month. According to the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), this increase in fuel prices comes amidst ongoing instability in the energy markets, largely attributed to the conflict in Iran.

Impact of Government Tax Reductions

Despite the government’s implementation of a tax reduction on March 22, which aimed to alleviate the economic impact of the war in Iran, gasoline prices have continued to rise. Since the reduction, there has been a cumulative 4% decrease in retail prices since gasoline landed at a low of 1.5 euros on April 22. However, this relief is overshadowed by the recent price rebound.

Diesel Prices Concur

Similar trends are observed in diesel fuel pricing. As of Tuesday, the price hit 1.748 euros per liter, the highest in two weeks. While diesel had recently dipped to 1.729 euros, it has since been on the rise. When compared to the date the tax reduction took effect, it remains 3% cheaper overall.

Cost of Fueling Vehicles

For consumers, these prices translate to substantial costs. Filling a gasoline vehicle’s 55-liter tank now costs approximately 85.35 euros, while a diesel tank costs around 96.14 euros, nearly eleven euros more. Historically, diesel had been the more expensive option until the recent decline in April when it averaged 1.802 euros per liter.

Regional Price Variations

The price disparity across Spain shows remarkable variance between regions. For instance, one service station in Baza (Granada) reported gasoline prices exceeding 2 euros per liter—2.05 euros to be precise—while diesel at that location sold for 2.1 euros. Conversely, Utrera (Seville) boasted the lowest gasoline prices at 1.309 euros per liter. Meanwhile, Rincón de Soto (La Rioja) offered the cheapest diesel at 1.429 euros.

Comparative Insights from the EU

In a broader regional context, recent data from the European Union (EU) places Spain in a comparatively favorable position for fuel prices. On average, a liter of gasoline across the EU is priced at 1.861 euros, with diesel at 1.975 euros. In fact, prices in the eurozone are even escalated, averaging 1.912 euros for gasoline and 2.017 euros for diesel.

European Price Leaders and Laggards

The Netherlands continues to hold the title for the most expensive fuels, registering 2.388 euros per liter of gasoline and 2.365 euros for diesel. In contrast, Malta maintains the lowest average prices in the EU, with gasoline and diesel at 1.34 and 1.21 euros per liter, respectively.
