Microsoft has just confirmed what many players have been sensing:  Game Pass  is set for a price increase. This isn’t merely a small adjustment; in the U.S., Game Pass is anticipated to rise significantly without prior warning. The popular subscription service has been segmented into three categories, each offering different levels of access and experiences. Following an increase a year ago, Microsoft has now raised Game Pass Ultimate’s price from  €14.99  to  €26.99 , marking a staggering  50% increase .

Game Pass Ultimate Rises 50%

Often dubbed “the Netflix of Video Games,” Microsoft’s Game Pass has evolved remarkably since its inception. Initially, players were required to download games, but with advancements, they can now stream games on various devices. While Game Pass initially offered a subscription-based catalog, it has since added cloud gaming and Game Pass for PC, enhancing its appeal. The ability to access new games at launch without any extra costs and to play titles from other publishers has made it an irresistible platform.

This year, Microsoft introduced a revamped online gaming system, integrating Xbox Live Gold into Game Pass, which has resulted in new price segments:

  • Game Pass Core for €6.99 — includes online gaming and a small selection of games.
  • Game Pass Standard for €10.99 — offers online gaming and access to over 300 titles.
  • Game Pass Ultimate for €14.99 — includes online gaming, over 500 games, and day-one releases.

Although prices rose to €12.99 for Standard and €17.99 for Ultimate last year, Microsoft seemingly realized it had been offering an excellent service at an unsuitable market price.

Game Pass Price

The updated pricing table highlights the significant rise, indicating that the Ultimate subscription will climb by  nine euros . Previously, the offering was priced significantly lower than competitors like Nvidia and PlayStation Plus. With new features including Ubisoft+ Classics and enhanced streaming quality for premium players, Game Pass Ultimate is becoming more competitive.

For €26.99,  Game Pass Ultimate  emerges as the premium option, vastly outpricing Nvidia’s offerings and positioning itself above PlayStation Plus subscriptions as well. The substantial rise has raised eyebrows among avid gamers, many of whom are now assessing the value of this groundbreaking service against their entertainment budgets.

The Great “But” is Game Pass’s Hook

Despite the  notable price increase , Microsoft has a strategic advantage. Game Pass Ultimate possesses no true competition currently, as it provides a unique value proposition:

  • Access to highly anticipated games from day one, without added costs.
  • In-house developed titles, such as the upcoming  Forza Horizon 6 .
  • Online gaming capabilities across devices, allowing downloads or streaming.

The sheer variety of gaming options and the presence of newly launched games enable Microsoft to justify the price hike. However, they are not the only major players in the evolving digital landscape. As streaming services for music and video continue to raise prices, gamers are left wondering when they might start dropping subscriptions.

Battle for video game market

Ultimately, while  Game Pass Ultimate  remains a valuable service offering a robust selection of games, the increased annual cost of €320 may prompt users to reconsider their subscriptions to other video/music services. The expansive library and integrated features still render Game Pass a fantastic option, but with the new pricing, every gamer will need to evaluate their personal budget carefully.
