– I am worried about the transition to upper secondary school, so I try to practice on my own, says Lykke Lise Aubert Prangerød. The 13-year-old has had no homework since starting school this year. She goes to a secondary school in Moss. This autumn, the municipality became the first municipality in the country to completely remove homework from all primary schools. It is important for all pupils at the municipality’s 17 primary and secondary schools. – I think it would have been better if we had had homework, says Lykke Lise. She thinks it has become more demanding to work on school work on her own at home. – You must have followed the class closely to know what you can practice for. Concerned for fellow students news wrote last week that several parents in Moss are very critical of homework-free school. Several have asked teachers about the possibility of buying teaching materials themselves: The teachers can no longer ask the pupils to do homework, they can only encourage them to work at home. Lykke Lise Aubert Prangerød doesn’t feel like she learns as much anymore. She believes that many people drop their schoolwork completely in their spare time, now that it is no longer a requirement. – I feel that I don’t take in as much as I did before. Frp: – Trial experiment The political left in Moss has had an ambition since 2017 to make the school homework-free. So now they have achieved success. Ole Martin Johansen in the FRP believes the policy has failed. He is worried about the children who are struggling at school. – Homework allows them to repeat the material and develop good school habits, says Johansen. He is convinced that the learning outcomes for the pupils in Moss will fall and that the pupils will face a big challenge when they start upper secondary school. – They will probably get a shock. Johansen believes that there is too little research that says anything about how students will develop further. – I would say it is a trial experiment on the students. Rejects the criticism The mayor of Moss, Hanne Tollerud (Ap), believes homework-free school will reduce differences. Mayor of Moss, Hanne Tollerud (Ap), does not believe that homework-free school will increase the social differences in the school. Photo: Julie Helene Günther / news – When we talk about equalizing differences, it is not an attempt to make everyone the same, says Tollerud. She believes it is more correct that all teaching takes place in the classroom. The mayor denies that they are experimenting on the children. – There is quite a lot of knowledge about this, and it is not an experiment on the students. She emphasizes that the homework-free school in Moss will be evaluated in the future. Hi Did you think of anything in particular when you read this case? Or do you have any thoughts on what I should write about? Please send me an email.
