Iceland’s Football Journey: From Glory to Struggles

This Tuesday, the qualification campaign of the  French national team  will witness the  Blues of Didier Deschamps  going head-to-head against Iceland. This match is pivotal as both teams vie for the top spot in their group. Fresh off their  2-0 victory against Ukraine , the French side will clash with  Strákarnir Okkar , who recently dominated Azerbaijan with a  5-0  victory. Iceland’s impressive start signals a new chapter for the team, showcasing emerging talent such as  Hakon Haraldsson  from Lille and  Albert Gudmundsson , who plays for Fiorentina. Additionally,  Andri  and  Daniel , the sons of legendary player  Eidur Gudjohnsen , are also stepping into the limelight as promising attackers.

With this talented roster, Iceland aims to rejuvenate its football scene after enduring years of underperformance. The team made headlines with its historic quarter-final appearance at  Euro 2016  and qualification for the  2018 World Cup . However, since then, Iceland’s footballing prowess seems to have dwindled, largely due to the aging of their  golden generation . Among the current squad, only  Sverrir Ingason  and  Hörður Magnússon  were part of the Euro 2016 squad. The once vibrant atmosphere surrounding Icelandic football—a spirited fanbase known for their enthusiastic clapping and blue waves—has faded, leaving behind memories of sensational upsets, like the  2-1 victory against England  at Euro 2016 and a  0-0 draw against Argentina  in the 2018 tournament. Since these milestones, the team has not participated in any major international competitions.

The Dark Side: Cover-Ups and Scandals

Alongside their decline on the pitch, the image of the Icelandic national team has also suffered due to a series of scandals. The most notable of these involves  Gylfi Sigurðsson , a star midfield player in the  Premier League , who was accused of  sexual abuse  against a minor. After spending nearly three years away from the game, he made a return in October 2023, but the shadow of these accusations has undeniably tarnished his reputation. The effects of the scandal extend beyond Sigurðsson; it raises questions about the operations within Icelandic football governance, particularly the  Icelandic Football Association ‘s (KSÍ) handling of allegations such as his.

In a further troubling revelation,  þórhildur Gyða Arnarsdóttir  disclosed that she was assaulted in 2017 by an Icelandic international. The incident was reportedly covered up by former KSÍ president  Guðni Bergsson , resulting in his forced departure alongside 15 other officials. Arnarsdóttir recounted, *“He asked me if I was ready to sign a non-disclosure agreement and to receive monetary compensation. I naturally said no.”* She later received a call from the player, who acknowledged his actions. The accused was none other than  Kolbeinn Sigþórsson , the team’s top scorer, with 26 goals in 64 games. Since retiring in 2022, he has faced backlash due to these allegations alongside other unresolved cases that perpetuate a culture of silence within Icelandic football.

Unveiling More Allegations

On top of the Sigurðsson and Arnarsdóttir cases, past allegations surrounding players such as  Aron Gunnarsson  and  Eggert Jónsson  have resurfaced, rooted in a troubling  2010 hotel incident  in Copenhagen. The victim reported being assaulted by two Icelandic men, describing traumatizing details in an Instagram statement.  Rúnar Már Sigurjónsson  has also faced sexual assault allegations, though many accused players avoided justice, leading to questions about accountability in the football community.

Despite the weight of these scandals, there is a glimmer of hope for Icelandic football. As the younger generation steps up—highlighted by the likes of  Albert Gudmundsson , who recently faced his own accusations but was later declared innocent—the team works to move from the darkness of its past back into the light.

As Iceland prepares for its upcoming match against France, the stakes extend beyond just winning. They symbolize resilience amidst adversity, with the nation aiming to reclaim its status and write a new, triumphant chapter in its football history. The road ahead may be challenging, but the team’s dedication and fresh talent signal a commitment to renewal and growth.
