Italian politician, president of the Jacques-Delors Institute, Enrico Letta was president of the Council of Ministers in Italy from 2013 to 2014 and president of the Diplomatic Forum of the GESDA Foundation (Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator). He also directed the School of International Affairs of Sciences Po Paris. In 2024, he presented the report “Much More Than a Market” on the future of the European single market. He is the author of several works, of which New ideas for Europe. With the women and men who make it (Odile Jacob, 2024).
On the occasion of your report on the internal market rendered in April 2024 (New ideas for Europe), you have engaged in a vast tour of this agitated Europe with a multitude of crises. In this panorama, do you find that a French singularity emerges?
It seems obvious to me. All this is linked to the fact that European construction was done on a double leadership, that of France and that of the French language. However, in recent years, both have incredibly backed away. I was passionate about European issues during the years 1980-1990, when Jacques Delors, who only spoke in French, chaired the commission. Thirty years later, when it came to making this report, I worked only in English, and I had to make this text a book so that the most important subjects of this work become readable for an Italophone, Spanish -speaking and French -speaking audience.
