Four Norwegian cities on the list of the world’s most valuable geocities – news Trøndelag – Local news, TV and radio

The International Organization for Geosciences (IUGS) announced on Tuesday its list of the most important geostats in the world. Two years ago, Jutulhogget in Innlandet got a place on the list. Now four Norwegian cities follow on the prestigious list. Fjord and glacier landscapes in Svalbard, larvicites in the East, moraines in the West and a special landscape in Trøndelag have been selected. – This is very big, says Kamilla Pedersen, day-to-day manager of Trollfjell geopark in Leka in Trøndelag. At Leka, the oceanic crust fell over the edge. The many layers are therefore visible. The Putelava in Leka has been created by the lava being cooled under water. The field in Leka is already a Unesco global geopark. Ophiolite complex In Leka, it is the so-called ophiolite complex that has made it onto the list. An ophiolite complex consists of rock that was originally formed under the sea, says Pedersen. – This is a result of a continental collision many hundreds of millions of years ago. This caused the ocean floor crust to be pushed up onto land and, in addition, to fall over on top. The field at Leka is therefore very visible. – Here you can go from the outermost layer of the earth’s crust all the way to the earth’s interior in just a few hours, explains Pedersen. The complex is completely unique, says Pedersen. – This is perhaps the best example of ophiolite in the world. She says it is with good reason that the field at Leka has been placed on the list of places that provide important knowledge. – Play is an important part of understanding how the world works. The Hornsundfjord in Svalbard has been selected for the list together with the Van Mijenfjord. The fjord and glacier landscape in the fjords are distinctive polar places. The plutonic larvikite in the Oslo rift. The Esmark moraine in Rogaland. After investigations here, Jens Esmark realized that Norway’s tide pools had been covered in ice. Four new Norwegian contributions – Norway’s geology is very diverse, says Tom Heldal, geologist at the Geological Survey of Norway. He says the list shows that Norway is rich in traces of old geological processes. In addition to the field at Leka, the fjords and glaciers in Hornsund and Van Mijenfjorden in Svalbard have also been selected for the list. The Larvikite in the so-called Oslo rift and the Esmark moraine in Rogaland have the same. Heldal believes that four new positions on the list can bring positive attention. – When Jutulhogget got a place on the list two years ago, it created quite a stir. – After the list position, one thought that “perhaps we should make a little more arrangements”. In good company This is the second time IUGS has published such a list. The first list was published in 2022 and contained 100 geostats all over the world. Now the next 100 places have been published. The Norwegian entries are in good company on the list. Among other things, find a famous landmark such as the volcano Vesuvius, the Dead Sea and the Yosemite Valley on the list. The five Norwegian cities are in good company on the list. Among other things with the famous Yosemite Valley in California.
