With a time of 7.38.19, he secured Ireland’s first men’s swimming gold in Olympic history. American Bobby Finke won silver, and Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri took bronze. Henrik Christiansen did not make it through the qualifiers on Monday and missed Tuesday’s final. The 27-year-old clocked in at 8.00.55 and called it his “worst race ever”. He was beaten by 24 men including teammate Jon Jøntvedt (7.59,16). Both Norwegians were far from a final place. In the women’s 100m backstroke final, Australian Kaylee McKeown defended her gold from Tokyo. American Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff came in behind.
