The demolition is a complicated job that has been carefully planned by a number of specialist departments. Since Wednesday, crews have been working to remove the bridge at Tretten. The part of the bridge that lies over the E6 will be cut and cleared away on Friday. In addition, the bridge element that stood up from E6 has been demolished. The hope is to get the 50-tonne truck safely on land. The remains of the collapsed bridge currently lie above the E6, which is still closed. – It is important for us to think about safety. In addition, there are logistics to think about. HSE is important to us. This of course affects progress, says section manager for operation and maintenance in Innlandet County Municipality, Arne Fredheim. The work to demolish the bridge will continue until 3pm on Saturday. After that, the crew will take a break until Monday. – Can happen suddenly Kari Hermanrud, communications adviser in Innlandet County Municipality, says that the work to pick up wreckage that is important for the investigation work is continuing. She says this takes time, but that it is important for the work to find the cause of the bridge collapse. – It is a goal to get the lorry down from the bridge during Friday. It will fall down when the bride deck leaves the foundation, she says. REMOVING PARTS: On Friday, the work to demolish the bridge is fully under way. Photo: Lars Erik Skrefsrud / news – It can happen suddenly, but it can also take a while. It’s hard to say exactly when that happens. The truck will fall straight down and be lifted out of the river afterwards. Consideration of the safety of the construction workers is given priority. The county municipality, the National Roads Administration and external professionals, including those with knowledge of hydrology, had a meeting today to start the planning of the temporary bridge. A working group will begin work next week. Carrying out a new inspection On Monday morning, August 15, Tretten bridge in Gudbrandsdalen collapsed while a car and a truck were out on the bridge. There was one person in each vehicle. Both emerged from the incident unharmed. 14 bridges are being inspected and checked again following the collapse of Tretten Bru. This is a so-called special inspection, which is an extended inspection that is carried out on the entire bridge structure, the Norwegian Roads Directorate informs. – After initial investigations into the causes of the bridge collapse of the Tretten bridge, we still have no explanation as to why this happened. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is now also asking all bridge managers to carry out a special inspection, says Morten Wright Hansen in the Directorate of Roads. This must be checked: Nodes and joints – especially with regard to weaknesses, defects, etc. All storage must be specially examined and photographed. All screwed connections must be checked. Welded connections must be checked. Deformation and sentences must be recorded. Sintef will carry out an investigation and the police are investigating the accident. All bridges of the same type as Tretten bridge were closed this week. In an emergency phase The stretch of river that runs under the bridge is a conservation area for birds, and continuous risk assessments must be made along the way. Janicke Haug is subject coordinator for the environment in Innlandet County Municipality. She says they are in an emergency phase now. The truck on the bridge has almost a full tank of diesel. It also has lime lying loosely on the plane. – Removing the scale can involve a risk of more instability in the bridge element. We are also afraid of the great height the lorry is standing in. We want to have the bridge element lowered in a controlled manner towards the water’s surface to prevent the lorry from tipping over. In addition, parts of Tretten Bru are impregnated with creosote, a cancer-causing substance that is also associated with environmental hazards. – We don’t want to get this in the water. But it can be difficult to avoid, says Haug. Have a theory about what might have happened Many have scratched their heads. The police are investigating the case. How could this happen? Tormod Dyken, former chief engineer in the Road Directorate, helped plan the Tretten bridge. None of the 14 bridges are built in the same way, he says. – I don’t think there are any other bridges in the whole world that are made in the same way. Tretten bru is a wooden truss bridge, which was completed in 2012. The bridge collapsed on Monday, only ten years after it was completed. Dyken believes it is important to look at how the bridge differs from other bridges. It is not a pure wooden bridge, like the other truss bridges in Norway. Thirteen bridges consist of both steel and wood. They are two materials that behave differently, especially when temperatures change.
