15 August 2024 at 17:08 First confirmed case of more contagious mpox in Sweden Sweden has had its first confirmed case of the more contagious variant of mpox, the Swedish Public Health Institute said at a press conference on Thursday. This is the first confirmed case outside Africa, writes NTB. The country’s authorities have previously stated that they expect individual cases of the disease to appear. The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that it has seen no signs that mpox has spread from ongoing outbreaks in Africa to Europe. So far this year, just under 15,000 cases of mpox have been registered in Africa, and over 500 deaths, according to the WHO on Wednesday. The disease mpox was formerly called monkeypox. The variant that is now spreading in Africa is believed to be more contagious and more deadly than the one that spread in 2022, writes SVT.
