His most famous work is “Das Boot” (“The Submarine”) from 1981, which depicts life – and the claustrophobia – on board a German submarine during the Second World War. Petersen’s assistant informs the German news agency DPA that Petersen died of cancer on Friday. Petersen was also behind a number of other films, including “Air Force One” from 1997, in which Harrison Ford plays the American president and “Troja” with Brad Pitt.
