Fighting fraud with artificial intelligence – news Vestfold and Telemark – Local news, TV and radio

– In the hands of the right people, AI is absolutely the best thing that can happen, says Rigmor Sørhus. The 79-year-old from Larvik was in the process of transferring money to an unknown number, when artificial intelligence came to her rescue. She is by no means the only one who has been contacted by people with dishonest intentions. – Several hundred fraud attempts – Towards the end of last year, we saw that there were starting to be a lot of fraud cases involving payments via Vipps. We then saw the need to take some action, and started work on an artificial intelligence model to stop fraud. That’s according to Hege Hagen, head of financial crime at the digital payment service Vipps. She estimates that hundreds of customers have been tricked into sending money to fraudsters using Vipps. Recognizes payment patterns Vipps has now developed a computer program that recognizes the methods used, and according to Hagen, they are now able to stop the vast majority of fraud attempts. – Our AI tool tracks all payments. When they recognize a pattern, they will stop and cancel the payment. Hege Hagen in Vipps talks about grateful customers. They say they want to protect the money, and you are asked to transfer money via Vipps to other accounts. Pretended to be a banker And that was exactly what Sørhus was about to do. The Larvik woman was contacted by a man who pretended to be from the bank. He said she was being scammed and told her to transfer money to another account where it would be safe. – I’m really only calling to help you out of this, and it must happen quickly, he said. Sørhus was convinced and tried to send the money, but then Vipps’ technology intervened and stopped the payment. Apple cake via KI – We have contacted several people who have experienced having their payment stopped. We informed them that we thought they were vulnerable to fraud and in the vast majority of cases it turned out to be true. – What did they say then? – They were very grateful, says Hagen. Rigmor Sørhus likes to use artificial intelligence to make apple cake.
