Cymru is the Welsh name for the country. Faw uses Cymru in all contexts, and now wants the national team to be called it in an international context as well. – The team should be called Cymru, which is what we call all our national teams. If you look at our websites we refer to ourselves as Cymru, says football president Noel Mooney. Faw plans to hold talks about a possible name change after the WC. However, according to the PA news agency, they have already spoken to the European Football Association (Uefa) about the team. Wales will take part in their first World Cup since 1958 when the championship in Qatar kicks off in November. – 2023 will be a year where we will have a good discussion with everyone involved. Whether it is the government, our own board or clubs and players, Mooney says, adding that it is not a given that the name change will be adopted. – We are in a very open and democratic organisation, so we will not decide today.
