– It is a family that is in deep grief. It fluctuates from hour to hour, up and down. At the same time, the family is relieved that Torjus has been found, says Fredrik Nuland Fedog. Torjus Seland’s family has appointed Fredrik as their spokesperson. He is a good friend of the family and knew the seven-year-old well. The family would also like to express their extreme gratitude for the efforts made. – To all the volunteers, all the professionals, those who have contributed at home so that others can go out and help and do practical things, says Fedog Almost two thousand volunteers took part in the search for Torjus (7). Many searched both day and night in the hope of finding the boy. Photo: Vetle Hjortland / news Found on the edge of the search area It was on Tuesday afternoon that Torjus Seland (7) was found dead in a wooded area near Langemyr in Lindesnes municipality. The seven-year-old was found under a large rock in the far north of the search area. He had then moved closer to three kilometers as the crow flies from the place where he was last seen. It was a dog patrol from the police that found the boy. On the day Torjus disappeared, he came away from his nine-year-old older sister and father Inge while they were hunting. This is a terrain where the family is well known. – Father Inge realized very early on that this is a terrain he cannot search alone. He then called the police to ask for help. He met a person he knows personally, so he was taken seriously from the very first second. The map shows the place where Torjus Seland was found dead. After only half an hour, all resources were mobilized, he says. – The family will also say that they are enormously proud of Torjus and what he has done since he disappeared from his older sister and father, until he was found, says Fedog. The family is exclusively positive about the handling of the search and the finding of Torjus. – That there will be criticism in events involving so many people, that’s just the way it is. And it’s good that questions are asked, because that’s what we learn from, he says. The area where the search was carried out is very hilly. Here, search crews carry out searches along a stream. Photo: Røde Kors Travel-happy since he was born The family friend describes Torjus as a travel-loving boy who has been with him since he could sit in a carrier. – Autumn has become an important time of the year. After all, this was a farm boy who was full of energy and imagination. You couldn’t pull a potato out of the ground without him being there, says Fedog. Torjus was a boy who never sat still, he was involved in everything that could happen. – There are only positive things about him. Torjus was very fond of practical tasks and you couldn’t do anything without him joining in the conversation, or catching up on what was going to happen. He joined when the tractor plowed the land, he drove a four-wheeler on the farm, he handled machinery and split wood, he says. Biggest search operation in many years The boy was reported missing by his family on Sunday at 1.30pm. The seven-year-old got away from his family in the forest area of Heddan, northwest of Vigeland in Lindesnes. It was the start of an extensive search that mostly involved close to 2,000 volunteers. The Home Guard, the Civil Defense, the Armed Forces, Norwegian Rescue Dogs, the Red Cross Aid Corps and Norwegian People’s Aid assisted the police in addition to the volunteers. Many people lined up to search for the missing seven-year-old in Lindesnes. Photo: Per-Kåre Sandbakk / news Dogs, helicopters and heat-seeking drones were used in the search. According to the police, it is the largest search operation in the region in many years. Death from hypothermia On Friday, the police received the preliminary autopsy report which shows that Torjus died from hypothermia. He probably died on Monday. Questions have been raised as to whether the police initially carried out too narrow a search. Chief of Police in Agder Kjerstin Askholt in Agder says they will evaluate the search operation thoroughly. The place where the boy was found could resemble a natural gap in the terrain. This may have been the reason why the boy was not caught by heat-seeking cameras. The relatives of Torjus (7) have seen news’s picture from the discovery site. Through the police, the next of kin have expressed their understanding that pictures of the discovery site are shown. Photo: Lars Eie / news Collected NOK 2.7 million After Torjus was found dead, friends of the family set up a Spleis. So far, close to NOK 2.7 million has been collected. Almost 13,000 people have so far given money. – This is a number that they have not been able to take in. You can see from several of the comments that there are families with children of the same age who show their support in this way, and they greatly appreciate that, says Fedog.
